GH2 What would be the best taking lens for a Bolex Moller Anamorphot 8/19/1.5x ?

After months of scouring vimeo, and waiting patiently I've decided that the Anamorphot 8/19/1.5 is the best looking Anamorphic lens I've seen on the gh2. It appears very sharp with little distortion by comparison to some of the other 2x anamorphics out there, and it's beautiful to look at.

Is it possible to perhaps use something like the Sigma 30mm 1.4 (62mm) as the taking lens? After searching around, I haven't found anything that would lead me to believe there's a stepping ring large enough to accommodate 62mm. If this is true, what would the ideal taking lens be?

Hi Mate,

I'll bite - please forgive if I state the obvious.

Great choice of lens. I have the lens. On the GH2 any lens greater than 35 mm should work because of the crop. 30 mm will vignette unless you use the EX tele mode. Also the 35 mm lens will vignette if you close the aperture down too far so the best is probably in the 42 mm plus and beyond category to avoid that I would imagine. Prime lenses are best. You may/will have to make a DIY mounting bracket or buy one off ebay. I made my own.

I use it with the cheap chinese 35 mm CCTV lens as used on the Cinemascope video on vimeo and also use a 35 mm nikkor. It does not have oval bokeh by the way so be aware of that.

The CCTV lens has character and the Nikkor AI lens is tack sharp. Gives great contrast between the two. You will need to consider getting a variable ND filter for the front end if you wish to shoot in daylight and you will need step up rings to do this on the anamorphic.

You will also need to focus both lenses as well but you can get used to this with time. No rack focussing.

All the best

hey. curious. did you ever figure out how to put the moller anamorphot onto a 62mm filter thread? i'm in the hunt for one those and would like to put it on a 50mm that has a 60mm filter size. was wondering if you ended up making it work. hope so.

I DIY everything. It is helpful to have the mount that comes with the lens. Saw one going for over a hundred pounds on ebay. By the mount I mean the threaded nut or whatever you call it so make sure the seller has them. I got them with my set. I then just used a host of step up and step down rings, lens caps and a few other bits like tonnes of glue to make it work. Works a treat now and it is non destructive. I can take it apart easily. If you are the creative kind you can make it work.
