Shooting a docu in august.

Should I shoot it at 720/24p, 720/30p, 1080/24p or 1080/30p and why?

Really depends on what you want and your final display method. I shoot 720 almost exclusively because it doubles the storage space, which can be a pretty big deal sometimes.

I would should 30p for practical reasons. 1080 or 720
It would be better for broadcast and 30p has film like motion in it.
24p gets you some ugly frameblending when you want to use it for broadcast .
I haven't figured out how to get rid of this.
Basicly how to convert 24p to 29.97 without getting ugly !?

I wouldn't use 30p for anything that has any potential of being seen internationally. So I'd say the choices are either 1080/24p if you want a film look, or 720/60p if you want a "live" video look.

Barry so have you come to the conclusion that 1080 is the best to shoot for anything unless you need the 720/60? I know you were still unsure a while back when you were doing your testing with the chroma info etc.

I'm doing a documentary in August/September and I think I'm going to do 720/60p. I haven't done conclusive testing, but my first run shows 60p can be converted to 24p without significant problems.

This gives me the most choices in post - plus the option of slow-mo. Final delivery format: the web.

I will most likely not be using slo-mo. The best comparison i can make is to that of Grey Gardens and the style of Cinéma vérité. It doesn't have a 'live' feeling, so i'll probably shoot 1080/24p.

Is 1080p chosen over 720p because it potentially could be shown internationally, or because of broadcast standards?

I could probably figure this one out on my own, but it is really late and I am fried at this point. What is the issue with 30p and internationality?

We do documentaries/features for television, NBC Universal- Sci Fi Channel , we shoot 1080 24p EX1/EX3. Now here's the thing , on delivery they will ask you for a HD version if available, but the trick is to get more money for it in HD and also available in SD . If you can, shoot 1080 24p, edit in HD and down convert to SD, you will cover all bases. Oh, i agree keep the live feel out unless you are purposely making it feel like a live interview or segment. Quality is on the rise and networks are picky when it comes to acquisitions! Good Luck on you Doc, Cheers
