what to do for audio?

I don't know much about this camera, but want to know how do you guys manage to capture good audio with this camera since it doesn't have any sort of XLR input. Do you record externaly and then mix/sync with the video? That's the only think kind of preventing me to buy this camera.

The D90 is not a video camera, it is an SLR that does video. Why would you expect it to have XLR inputs?

But in answer to your question, shoot double system. That is to say, go find yourself a sound recordist. ;) Sync the sound up in the edit, the same way you would if you shot film.

yes Yes YES! This isnt a camcorder. Its a great SLR that has a functional movie feature. If your looking for pro audio, I suggest a camcorder with a great shotgun Mic.

I mostly do video so I own a Canon HF11 with all the trimmings and I also own a D90 because I was always turned off with the DOF adapter industry...

The D90 is a damn good D-SLR in itself and then it is also able to record great video if the user is capable of patience and executions....audio is mono and is you can tell that Nikon wasnt aware that so many ppl want this thing for video so I bet they will upgrade with stereo eventually...or perhaps a mini jack..but i cant see any XLR jacks EVER on a DSLR

Lol. We want our video !!!

why would i want to use a camera to record audio? i wonder if people in the audio forums complain that their recorders don't shoot video...

Jowel, You can use a Zoom H4 Recorder with Lav or Boom mics.

Cheers

I shot this video on the D90 and the audio was recorded on a Zoom H-4 in MP3 mode. Most of the sound was recorded by a Rode NTG-2 shotgun and the voice over section at the end was recorded on the Zoom's own built in mic, which is quite good. The background/natural sound audio was from the D90's built in mic. I had my daughter clap her hands before she started talking so I could sync up the sound in editing.

The OP is not in the minority (nor did he sound like he was complaining, simply inquiring). His question was completely valid. The D90 shoots fantastic video, why wouldn't one seek the best way to get good audio out of it too? At least the Mark II peeps don't even have to ask questions like the OP's since Canon was nice enough to give them an external mic input.

i've found that the only minority on the internet is people with a sense of humor. :-)

Somehow I knew that was going to be your response ;)

Sorry, the reason I got defensive was because it took 4 responses before the guy got an honest answer to his question. The first three were literally just "the D90 isn't a camcorder".

Oh was that supposed to be funny? Must have lost something in the translation.

But seriously I agree with Matt. If you wanna be a filmmaker and you go out and buy yourself a vintage Ari you don't expect it to come with balanced 24bit XLR in's. I'm kinda glad Nikon neglected the audio, it seperates the men from the boys. If it did have a 16bit minijack in I might have been tempted to be lazy and use it.

Instead after much advice from you guys and some intensive googling I got myself a Zoom H4, a Rode NTG-1, and a shockmount hotshoe adapter. When I stop pissing money away on fast glass I'll get a sound devices pre-amp, the Zoom pre-amps are not the best.

And furthermore I like the modular nature of the D90. It's like a budget red one. You get to choose your lens and sound recording options according to your poverty level. When the features start screening this is gonna be THE indie cult camera. nostrasquig has spoken!

...good example of syncing audio from an external source...

It already is, stop doubting. I don't think that it will be for very long either but this is the year of the d90. /matt
