what the hell's wrong with f5?

Okay. I just gort my DVX100A this weekend. Can someone tell me why the scene file F5 looks like ass? It looks really grayish and non-contrasty when compared with all the other scene files including F6.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't F5 and F6 be identical in terms of image quality (Both 24p, but just with diferrent pulldown methods).

What gives?

Also, can anyone explain the function of the the "setup" @ either 0% or 7.5% setting in the menu? I know this is most likely refering to IRE values of black, and my guess is that this maybe has something to do with the difference between the two presets (F5 and F6).

I duno.. I'm all messed up.... can someone explain to me what IRE is again? Seriously... aghh... which one do I want the cam set at?

Thanks!!!!

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

Try to reset you camera's scene file presets to the stock options(there is a way, but I forgot how... Check your manual). They should look quite the same.

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

On the 100 there was only the thin/thick difference (IIRC) but on the 100A I believe they use different gamma settings too. So look to the gamma setting as the source of your grayishness.

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

these are the default settings... i haven't changed anything...
I Don't get it.

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

Just try your reset button. You never know what might have been touched while packing.

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

Alright, I've figured it out. F5 defaults to 0 master ped and F6 defaults to master ped -5.

Is there any way to change the presets?

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

You can change all those settings to whatever you want, and then save them using the scene file menu "save" option.

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

the dfault DVX100A gamma setting on F5 is cinelike V, very very contrasty, way too much in fact.
F6  default is cinelike D, pretty good but a bit noisy and artificial looking.

If you want to reset the file scene to default, in the menu, go to:

"Scene File", then  "Save/Init", then "initial"  then "Yes".

For the best filmic look IMHO, select "high" gamma, "cine-like" matrix (color), and lower the midtones in post.
You'll see that there will be rich true colors even in the shadows, which are impossible to obtain with cinelike, cinelike D. And the shadows will be much more solid than with the cinelike V without the exagerated midtones.

IMHO, the "high" gamma setting is the very best choice for a true filmic look the DVX100A has to offer. The high luma knee looks very natural and the shadows are crisp, detailed, and colorfull.

here are 3 grabs from a DVX100A with the anamorphic adapter converted for 4/3 display, using the "high" gamma setting with slightly lowered midtones and lowered color saturation in post. Much better than cinelike gamma IMHO.
no polarizer filter...
the sky was cloudy on the 1st grab...

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

Thanks! GREAT shots! I'm very impressed. I've got A LOT more testing to do w/ my new cam :)

Is there ANYWHERE to find a guide to the different menu seetings on the DVX100a? Like explainations of all the different cine gama settings and their effects?

thanks again!

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

I'm very close to releasing a comprehensive book/DVD guide that will cover all that stuff. Keep an eye posted to DVXUSER.COM for an announcement of when it's available.

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

Any hint of how soon is "soon" Barry? Please put me down for a copy of your book sight unseen... I learn so much from your posts, I'm sure this book will be great!

Looking forward to it!

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

Well, soon... :)

Sigh. The DVD is done, it's almost an hour long and has nine segments to it. The book is all "there", but it needs to be organized and arranged and put into a comprehensive order. So soon... I'm already a week past when I wanted it done by. So, I'm workin' on it! :)

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

Barry,

That's AWESOME! I'll order one as soon as it's available. I just got through reading your Anamorphic guide, it answered all my questions in perfectly clear language. It's absolutely brilliant and so well written.

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

Wow, thanks for the kind words! Glad you like it, and I hope it's helpful. This new one is *almost* done...

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

Antoine,
I also feel that the high gamma setting gives the best "shadow detail", particularly on sunny exteriors and other contrasty subjects. My tests show the Cine-Gamma to be muddy overall (my subjective opinion only), and the CineV is way too contrasty.
However, on interiors with controlled lighting I use the normal gamma setting. The Cine Matrix can be useful in scenes without a lot of strong red or orange tones...the camera already punches these colors up too heavily, and the Cine matrix makes it worse.
Generally, Normal matrix works fine. Saturation can always be enhanced in post.
I've started keeping notes on my chosen settings in various lighting conditions for image consistency...makes it a lot easier to 'dial-in" a look.

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

KPLO,

exactly,

that's why i prefer "high" and "normal" gamma setting over "cinelike, or cinelike D or cinelike V".

...and it records much better color in the shadows with "high" and "normal" gamma settings.

Maybe cinelike (and D and V) is a real hard work in real time for the camera.
I ALWAYS achieved better results doing the cinelike gamma curve in post. And, also, the image is much cleaner this way.

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

Barry, can we pre-order? you know my cash takes longer to do the crossing ;D! ANd are we going to get to see you on screen . . . you have to be there or I'm not buying it . . . either a prologue, outro or best would be guiding us throughout!

Re: what the hell's wrong with f5?

I think you'll rather look at the hostesses I have, rather than my ugly mug...

... but I do prattle on in the DVD about menu settings for something like 20 minutes, if that counts!

Plus there's a hundred pages of book so far, although I'm trying to trim that down :)
