hey. just wondering what tapes people run in their xha1? i've read that normal mini dv tapes can wear the heads down faster than hdv tapes. i know not to mix brands but was just wondering what brand to start off with. cheers

haha... this question will get you tons of answers and little true agreement. However, I just bought an XH-A1 two weeks ago and I've been doing a lot of research reading the boards here and at dvinfo and it looks like the majority of users prefer the Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ tapes. The cheapest I've found them is $4.95/each at http://www.vidinc.net/panay63mindv.html. Others like B&H sell them for around $6/each. If you want a slightly cheaper tape, then you can look at the Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ tapes. Those run as low as $2.73/each at http://www.vidinc.net/panay1.html.

There's been lots of discussion over which tapes perform the best in the A1 and which tapes have the fewest dropouts. From all my research, it seems like everyone likes their own particular tape and at least someone has had dropouts on every single tape out there. For what it's worth, the majority of users who post on these forums use the tapes I've listed above and seem to like them. You can get the Sony/Canon HDV masters, but you'll pay well over double the price and some people have still reported drop outs on them.

The first tape I ran through my A1 when I got it was the included Canon HDV master (which, by the way, sells for almost $16/each). It had four dropouts on it. I'm waiting for my shipment of Pansonic AY-DVM63PQ tapes and until it comes in I've been using the cheapo Panasonic consumer tapes and haven't had a dropout yet.

Biggest thing to remember is what you stated above: pick a tape brand and stick with it.

I have been using those cheap Sony Premium (blue wrapper) tapes for years, and after over 100 tapes I don't know that I've had more than 3 or 4 dropouts. Never mix, never worry.
