What sound set up do you use?

What type of sound system do you guys use on your computers to do your sound editing on? I use a 2.1 speaker set up which is good but not sure what most people use or whats recommended?

I don't use surround or use a subwoofer. I have an old set of KLH passive monitors I use. I have some M-Audio BX8's I use for my Protools computer. I occasionally use some Sony headphones. They seem to work better for background sound effect mixing...more intricate type stuff. Too much of The Crystal Method on 10, I guess.

Legion of Boom is a good album.

Yeh. Good times in 2004 dancing like a dick to Crystal Method at my flat party stoned out of my face. Haha.

Personally, I resort to my Sennheiser Headphones, which I love. They not only isolate the sound, but have a very nice range and help me to focus on my work.

Later, I will test out my audio mix on other people's systems to get a cross idea.

I know the headphone route is not the most "professional," but for dudes like me on a budget, you can beat it!

I've been known to mix with my Beyerdynamic DT831 headphones, which are great for mixing on a budget, as long as you check the mix with speakers, unless your audience will only be listening with headphones...

I personally use M-Audio BX8a's and I love them. I also use the Shure SRH-440 headphones.

I used to use a really cheap speaker set that my friend was going to throw away. After editing my first short with it, I learned my lesson. (couldn't hear any of the dialogue and the bass was WAY too heavy)

A pair of BX8a retails at $599.00

Luckily, I got a great deal on them and got 60% off. If your looking for a great set of reference monitors. Also look into KRK RoKits 6 or 8. They are a bit on the pricey but I just recently saw them go on a 5 year anniversary sale or something and you could pick one of them up for $130 a piece. I would personally go for the KRK but I couldn't pass up the deal on the BX8a so I scooped them up.

Did some research and found the KRK does sell their products in NZ. I'm not too sure about M-Audio. M-Audio is the same company as AVID so I would assume that they would sell it in NZ. I'm not sure. I found a place in NZ that sells the KRK:

Check them out, they seem to have quite a bit of stuff. A lot stores have their monitors on the floor to try out. Test them out and pick one that isn't too taxing on your wallet. :)

Best of luck on the monitor hunting!
