AVID.  Mac or PC... But the PCs are faster no question. ;D
Not in real world test, but in video gaming I think you are correct.

I know of few professionals who use FPS rates for Doom III as their tests for computer speed, which is where the PC shines in performance because of heavily optimized video cards. And most PC heads use heavily slanted tests to cherry pick out victories on the G5. Raw computational power, it smokes the Intel, and is neck and neck with the AMD.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

Vegas.. second to none, Rock solid stability and unsurpassed audio tools.. No question in my mind.. Oh and most importantly supports 24p.. hmmmmmm

Ok I know some of these other apps are NOW doing that within the last few months.. lol

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

Just giving you my personal opinion based on my own experiences editing on both systems. Thats all. I dont care about the tests just how fast my work gets done. ;)

I am with you brother!!!!

By the way, thank you for your calm manner in discussing this issue. I do not believe this should be an issue that causes animosity, although as one of the people who had to subdue an angry AVID editor once, I know it certianly does.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

Can I ask you Vegas people a stupid question. I use the razor tool in P.Pro to cut a clip. Where is the cut clip tool in Vegas? :(

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

I use Vegas 5.0 on PC - powerful, intuitive & fairly stable. Its audio tools are excellent. Great customer support too - Vegas programmers actually hang out on their company-sponsered forum & answer questions!

Put the cursor on the frame you want to be the first frame of the clip to the right of the cursor and hit S.

Are you familiar with the phrase "better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt"? You won't find anybody in this major market with a PC that would want to compete against me on our Macs...

The PC's are faster on an Avid (by choice) but are not faster in general. One by one in this town the Avids are being replaced with Mac FCP systems... especially in the HD arena. Recently I did a project with 55 layers in FCP (we no longer bother with AE)... try that on an Avid.
hmmmm a PC faster than a G5 with 8 gigs of RAM and a lot of hard drive space....are you sure about that? I don't have 8 gigs yet but I do have a gig and a 1/2 in my G5 and she is pretty quick. The G5 is a whole lot faster than my PC.
Before you go to 8GB of ram, I'd ask around. Those of us that have done testing seem to come to the same conclusion. With FCP, 2.5GB is a good minimum and beyond 3.5GB there seems to be a diminishing return. You'll see a lot of 2.5 and 3.5GB configs out there for that reason... just my two cents. Personally, I'd save the money from the extra 4.5GB and buy that screaming video card for Motion if you intend to get that program.

You are aware that FCP had 24p and 24pa support first, right?

Vegas is a nice program, and since it was initially an audio program, it excels in that area. Although, between SoundTrack and GarageBand (and a cheap $100 42 key keyboard) I don't feel particularly hamstrung... :-)

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

dvxshooter,

i have to wonder how much the mac cost, and how much the PC cost.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

The first NLE I learned was AVID, and the whole time I was bugged by how counter-intuitive it is.

The AVID I'm using is a shared resource and I'm looking into getting my own NLE -- I'm interested in Vegas and Adobe Premiere Pro.

I used Vegas 3, pre-Sony, and it was a pig, but it had smoking audio even then.

I think it was DV magazine (apologies, not sure which) whose shoot off, constructing equivilant computers for Mac and PC, found that the 4500 buck machines varied in price about $100 bucks cheaper for the PC, and might have been closer except they bought a floppy disk for the Mac and went with a generic video card on the PC.

55? Big deal. Ive done 87 uncompressed and heavily keyframed complete with tranfer modes and motion blur. And yes that was all on Avid.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

Everyone seems to be focusing on the speed of Macs and PCs, etc, etc..
Has anyone mentioned the famous Windows Blue Screen?

I had never had a blue screen on my Mac.

People who say that Macs are slower than PCs, haven't tried Macs for sure.

All the best

Fidel.

PS: Both machines are good, but PCs with Windows are very likely to crash more often than Macs.

Siiiiggh. That again.

My PC doesn't crash.

NT4 was a pig, but my Windows 2000 machine is pretty stable. It tends to catch any virus on the network, and hates to recognize firewire drives, which earns my ire, but it is a far shade better than NT4 was when it was inflicted on me.
