What resolution for Green Screen?

Hey Everyone,

Ive been shooting a project for a local college, everything so far has been in 720 30P, but ive been wondering, if i want to take full advantage of the camera's color capability do i want to shoot my green screen interviews in 1080 30P? Ill probably be using MPEG streamclip to transcode the footage to DNxHD, so would downsizing the 1080 30P to 720 30P to fit with my other footage be a breeze? Im, not sure if there's anything else i should be considering please let me know as this is my first project with this camera / all this software / these techniques. Thanks!

yes 1080 will give you more chroma information so i would shoot 1080 definitely for greenscreen. shouldnt be an isuue to down-rez to 720. it may help to turn the detail down in camera to get smoother edges with your key.

Unquestionably, definitely, 1080 for greenscreening. Especially if you're going to be downsampling to 720, but it depends on how that transcode is done.

1080-to-720 will result in a file that's got much better color accuracy than a native 720p file, if done properly.

I assume since most of my footage is in 720 30P ill want to shoot the 1080 in 30P also correct?

Will MPEG streamclip or any other batch transcoder that can go to DNxHD do the "proper" 1080-to-720 that Berry speaks of? Where is this done in the transcoding process?

Thanks!

why bother downrezzing?
just drop your 1080p clips in your 720p project.
the default for most NLEs is to scale the clip down to fit your project and you'll have a little wiggle room if you want to reframe or change the zoom on a shot....a technique i find very handy for greenscreen projects.
