I have ML on my T2i. I have been shooting on default setting the whole time, but I wanted to know if I should shoot at a higher or lower bitrate, and what bitrate so my camera doesn't stop recording after a few seconds. Something acceptable.
This all depends on what type of card you are ysing. If you just start playing with it you will be able to see a difference. I usually shoot at firmware default on my 32gb class 10 cards and it works fine. If your camera is automatically stopping recording then start going lower until it will record as long as you are trying for. Keep in mind that a lower bit rate means a lower footage quality though.
lower will give you longer recording time, at the sacrifice of quality. Higher should technically improve the quality in theory, however in practice it appears not to be the case.
It would appear that Canon's imaging system (with well documented resolution issues) is already a good match for the bitrate they are using by default. That is, any degradation in quality is not the result of a limited bitrate, so raising it seems to have little to no effect.
I want to get higher quality, and not less quality with more recording time.
But, increasing the bitrate about the default (whatever it is at default) is pointless then??
I have seen comparisons between CBR 1.0x and CBR 1.8x which confirm what m. gilden is saying. Considering all the extra bandwidth, yes it does seem pointless.
I haven't seen any detailed comparisons between firmware default and CBR 1.0 for typical scenes - what's the word on the street?
