What Makes A Good Director?

Rule #1 - do not open a non-political film with a political jab, even if most of your fans may share the sentiments. Because others may not.

i agree.

on another note...did anyone notice how often the "focus" was off when interviewing these people? hands were in focus and not the face. the apple laptop was in focus not the face...ETC. i enjoyed the video but noticed this and found int very distracting. i feel like sort of a dick for saying so though.

I also agree on keeping politics out of it, because the subject matter is not inherently political to begin with, so why drag all that in? And I say that regardless of whether I agree or not with the political leanings of the creator. For that matter, keeping religion out of it applies too, IMHO (there wasn't any here) - just two things one should avoid unless they're the specifc issue being discussed... no discussion is ever made better by dragging politics or religion into it when it's not directly relevant.

That said, it was an interesting topic. I think that the broader context is particularly appropriate - as "leadership" doesn't apply just to being a director in film. It's the same when you are boss in a business - you find that the role of a "friend" is frequently affected by the dynamic of a supervisory role, especially when there is a long history. For this reason it can sometimes be awkward when you hire a "friend" and now you have to be the boss. And can you really be "friends" with your employees or subordinates? That dynamic can be tricky to navigate.

I just finished shooting a low-budget feature length film and found this topic fascinating because of all the personalities I had to deal with. I liked the idea that a director needs to have a clear vision for the story and what he wants. And he can be nice or a bit of a dick about how he goes about achieving that result, but he has to be clear on his vision. I guess that sounds obvious when I think about it, but being true to your vision. I can see that now when I look back.
