What Mac?

What Mac's can be used for reasonable balance of budget and performance?

*I am likely to use the 7D for a documentary so the factor of storage and general efficiency is a factor personaly.

We used to have several iMacs, at first they served their purpose well but as we needed to add more capability for editing, MXO2, hardware accelerators for compression, etc., they became relegated more for administrative tasks. They are very limited and not easily upgraded.

We purchased a few lower end Mac-Pro's that we have continually upgraded, more RAM, Fiber Channel, new Graphics cards, other PCIe cards etc.,, which has significantly increased the usability of these systems. Some of them are first generation Intel machines.

I don't regret purchasing the iMacs but if I had it to do over I would have saved the money we spent on iMacs to put towards the Mac Pro.

being able to always upgrade a Mac Pro is something to keep in mind if you can afford it, but if not, i have edited countless documentaries on both Imac systems and MacBook Pro systems... and that wasn't even the newer of the two systems... so it has to be even better now

Just got a new Quad-Core 27" iMac with the i5 processor. It beats the **** out of the Quad-Core MacPro i'm using at my office. Final Cut Suite 3 AND Adobe CS4 are running fast and smooth, I'm pretty much in Mac heaven.

The guy at the Mac store talked me out of doing the i7 processor and instead putting the money towards doubling the RAM. After 3 weeks on the machine, I have absolutely no complaints or regrets.
