What lens is better

Hello forum dvxuser
My English is not very good
I hope they understand me
I want to buy a panasonic gh5 camera
I want to dedicate video to (film) I'm not professional
And looked for a lens that is approximately 1000 dollars
I want the videos to look good, And the photo is pretty too
I know can not have everything, nice, cheap

I see that there are 3 lenses
which is better , What lens is better
Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens
Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens
Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 35-100mm f/2.8 II POWER O.I.S. Lens
With some lens of these being better the image = Panasonic AG-DVX200 4K

I had a panasonic ac 160 and sold it to go to 4k
And I want something lighter Of less weight
I also do not plan to use mic XLR

I'm not sure anybody can really say one of those lenses is better. They all serve different purposes at a rather consistent level of visual performance.

12-35 is better in low light at 35mm than the 12-60mm lens but the 12-60mm lens gives you more range to work with without having to swap lenses. To some people not swapping lenses is important to how they shoot. The 35-100 is also a great lens but its mostly meant for long reach type shoots. If you only plan on having one lens the 35-100 would be the least realistic choice since you would never be able to shoot wider than 35mm which is tough. Shooting narrative film projects tends to fall in the 12mm to 50mm lens range for a m43 camera which is why you see most of the prime lenses within this range.

If low light is a major concern and you never plan on lighting your projects than the 12-35mm may be a better choice, not that f4.0 is horrible compared to f2.8. If you will only have one lens for awhile then the 12-60 may be a better choice. Especially considering at 12mm it is just as bright as the 12-35. Even up to 20mm it should still be brighter than f4.0. The 12-60 pretty much covers the area of a full set of cinema primes albeit not as bright.

The choice of how bright you want your lens is really only something you can answer. If the 12-35mm was the only clear answer Panasonic wouldn't bother making the 12-60 lens because nobody would buy it. The reality is however all lens are good choices. It is about your needs that determine which is better for you.
 
I think if I could only buy one lens I now I would get the 12-60mm... I shoot outside in bright sun often when I shoot inside I have lights so the f4 is not an issue.

Just to play the devils advocate here, none of the Panasonic zooms are very good for that cinematic look if you ask me. I would highly recommend that you get at least a couple of the prime lenses at f/1.7 or better. I have the 15mm f/1.7, 25 f/1.4 and the 42.5mm f/1.7. The depth of field you get with these wide open is nearly the perfect sweet spot for cinematic images on the gh4/gh5 IMHO.

f/2.8 and above is just too clinical looking of an image for me with the GH series crop factors. F/2.8-f/4 is the same as shooting f/5.6 to f/8 on full frame cams for depth of field. If I had to buy only one lens for the Gh5, I would surely get the 42.5mm f/1.7 first up as it's image is truly astounding for the cost. It's just the sweet spot for the 2x crop factor when doing any sort of portraiture / head shot type work. The zooms just don't even compare.

So looking forward to my Gh5 showing up next week to give it a whirl :)

One of these is you mention to me, Or is of another (brand Make)lens
Could help me a little more what would be, and For the night is good
I know that can not have everything in 1
Which is the most approximate that serves for day and night lens

Hey Rolando,

The first two are the ones I have. The DJI is the same lens as the Panasonic 15mm, but I'm not sure if it has the same firmware as the Panasonic. The DJI lens is for their high end drone. I supposed it would work exactly the same as the Panasonic 15mm.

F/1.7 works very well for low light but more importantly you can get significantly shallower depth of field than with the f/2.8 zooms.

Any way you end up going, you are going to like the GH5. Just make sure you have at least one lens that allows lower light images and shallower depth of field. If I had to have a zoom, I'd get the 12-35mm f/2.8 and the 42.5mm f/1.7

With those two you could film just about anything :)
