What is the widest lens for the GH1?

Fantastic explanation, thanks. I use Nikon cameras for stills so it's great to know that it's best to purchase Nikon lenses for my Panasonic as well :-)

Not trying to start a debate but always plan ahead. I bought the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 Nikon mount, used it on my GH1, now its on my 7D. It will sit on a RED one day I hope. 4/3rds lenses leave you boxed in a corner, you're stuck on the 4/3rds system.

The Panasonic lens has fly-by-wire focussing, the Tokina has mechanical focus, which is a huge advantage.

Is it necessary to be constantly rhetorical? Whether you intend it or not, it ends up being very condescending and patronizing. Let me reiterate... I'm not a dummy. Forget that I used that term.

When in post (after effects) there is a need to choose cameras, edit focal depths and manipulate scenes according to precise camera FOV mathematics. When buying FD lenses... knowing the difference a 15mm "fisheye" lens will have DOES matter. To not have a frame of reference is stupid.

Perhaps the comparison to a 35mm film camera is the difference? Many have said there is only a 30% difference in FOV...Barry, need your filling in the pieces here.

I believe that statistic is coming from the fact that the GH1's crop factor vs a 35mm motion picture camera is 1.3x but vs a 35mm full frame still camera is 2x.

Yep.

Oh, and if you want a wide angle lens on a GH1, you could always use this...

Of course, at 1.3mm (yes, 1.3mm! Take THAT, 7mm not-so-wide!) you'll have a profoundly wide angle, probably a complete 180-degree fisheye view or close to it. And it'll be a small circle of illumination in the middle of a black frame. But you didn't specify that you wanted the widest "fully usable" lens, right?

A better question would be, What is the widest rectilinear lens for the GH1?
(especially as most of us are doing narrative work)

True... so i think we're all looking for a wide rectilinear fast fisheye... so anything under 14mm 4fstop (as the kit lens) will probably do. I was considering the 16mm 2.8 zenitar which I can pick up for 140 euros... but just for the extra speed, I think its a bit of a waste. I think ideal would probably be the 10mm 2.8, Sigma as mentioned below.

One thing that's important to remember is that the FOV at 50mm on the stock GH1 lens is the same as a 50mm Canon FD lens.

Yes, that's because all 50mm lenses provide the exact same FOV for any given image format (like Micro Four-Thirds).
