What is the point?

It seems the issue is then how much HD material will fit on a standard 4.7 gig DVD. The Toshiba HD DVD player offers the playback option. Seems the market will really expand as soon as the DVD capacity increases and burners are available. One last simple question. If I create a one hour doc using HD 720p is that exported to tape and a Network retrieves material from tape to broadcast?

Not sure if it was mentioned, but you should be able to get a good hour+ of 720p WMV on a 4.7Gb DVD. There's a preset in the Adobe Media Encoder. (I think you have to set it to stereo unless you're using 5.1)

That is good to know. I assume that is only viewable on a computer monitor? What would it take to connect a laptop to someones home HD screen and get the best quality?

or an hour of MPEG4....

If you can view an hour of 720p as 4,7 GB H.264-footage with a regular DVD-Player that is MPEG4-compatible, then why not do it that way?

Not quite so simple. To get an accurate answer you would have to contact the network you are considering working with. Some may take a tape of 720p material others will require that it be 1080i.

Thanks for all the help. Plan on ordering the camera today. Stopped by BestBuy yesterday and they are beginning to sell HDDVD players and soon burners. So the market is here. Also other posts show that HD content can fit on standard DVD's. Soon SD will be like the 8 track so it's best to get on with the show.

Still questioning the P2 cards vs Firestore, Cineporter (not released yet) and DV Rack. Any suggestions on best combination. I shoot interviews run and gun as we as wilderness shots.

FS100 will be your best bet as it will soon support native frame rates and the Cineporter has been delayed (don't know when we'll get it). It'll make the camera better for run and gun and longer interviews but will add extra weight and needs a battery. P2s with a laptop for offload work better for narrative film work.

Where are you buying the camera? Probably a subject for a different forum, but just curious. I plan to buy one in about 3 or 4 weeks... as soon as I sell my FX1, but I need a good price.

On your question of delivery. I worked on The Casino, a reality show which was shot varicam. They mastered to DVCPRO HD tape. Not sure if they delivered on that format or dubbed it to HDCAM or something. But that was at least the initial master. A dub house can copy to a different format.

Once you output source resolution, to like an AJHD1200, that deck can then transcode to 1080i or 720p or ntsc or whatever on re-output. Earlier this year I mastered a 720p60 show to that deck. I also have a self-contained quicktime file of it. When I tried to make NTSC DVDs from the DVCPRO HD quicktime, the software downconversion was aweful and had field issues. I assume because the source was progressive and some of it 60fps progressive. So ultimately I output to tape and then recaptured it having the deck downconvert to NTSC. Very very clean downconversion.. no field issues. Made a clean DVD.

[edit] - Oh.. by the way. The AJHD1200A and DVCPRO HD tapes have a limit of 32 min at 100mps. So I'm not sure how you master an hour long show. Long Play mode? Wait.. Now I'll have to look and see. I'll look in the morning and post the answer.
