What is "STD" written in the LCD display (left of the focus distance reading)

Hi, there are 3 letters on my LCD display. to the left of the shutter speed (180.0d), above the F stop reading, and to the right of the Focus distance.

It suddenly came on and at first it was for Skin Tone Detail. And maybe I had hit a Skin Tone Detail button I didn't know I had. But I did a lot or research and could not find such a button, only a way of turning it on and off under scene file.

I then discovered I had bumped the Manual setting switch to Auto. When I moved it back to Manual the STD letters went away.

My question is? What does that stand for? My Skin Tone Detail is turned off in settings. So if it is that, why would it come on in Auto? Or is it for something else?

Thanks!

It means the camera is in autoiris mode, using the "standard" settings ("STD"), as opposed it using the profile for backlight compensation ("BLC") or spotlight compensation ("SPT").

Thanks Barry,

I have your DVD and I vaguely remember you covering what STD meant but was unsure which section it was in. I searched the DVD for a little while to no avail but did discover that I could set the focus and zoom distances to read in feet and mm instead of the generic 1-100 numbers which I think must be the default. How I missed that when I watched the entire DVD I when I first bought it I don't know. It's a big one - I'm still kicking myself I've shot for so long without knowing that. It's much easier to calculate depth of field distances now!

Thanks again for clearing up the STD question I had. And thanks for your DVD! I can't tell you how much it helped me out with the 170!

- Chris
