First off... it sounds like you haven't read the manual :Drogar-Mad(DBG):
Please take the time to read it through as you will REALLY get more out of the camera if you know how it works.

In a nutshell, the ND Filter switch is designed to prevent overexposure when there is too much light - when your footage is over exposed you will see a message in the viewfinder saying "ND 1/8", "ND 1/16" "ND 1/64" - adjust the switch to that value and (using the auto iris function) your footage will not be over exposed.

A "ND Filter" is a "Neautral density" Filter .. basically it's a pice of darkened glass that you can put into the light-path (using the switch) to reduce the amount of light hitting your sensor.

The filters behind the switch are built into the camera. You can also get external ND filters to put on your lens that looks somthing like this:

Optically it has little to no effect on the image.
But if you have it turned on when it's too dark, the camera will have to compenste with gain, which will reduce image quality.

If you have enough light and turn it on, it will allow you to open the iris to reduce depth of field if you wish.
