AC130: What frame rate is better for a dance show, 720 at 60P or 1080 at 60i?

I have a AC130 and I have always shot shorts, in the past, at 1080 60i with my Canon XH-A1. I did this because I did not have the 720 60P option. Should I try the 720 60P option instead of the 1080 60i.

I will be selling mostly DVDs but some Blu-ray discs of the shows.

Both will give you the "live" look. 1080/60i has higher spatial resolution, but is only a half-frame 60 times per second. 720/60p is a full progressive frame 60 times per second, but is lower spatial resolution.

For mastering DVDs, I'd prefer to originate in 720/60p instead of 1080/60i.

But for Blu-Ray output, either would be totally acceptable.

If you will be doing any reframing, and likely even if you're just downscaling to SD, you will get a better result from a progressive source.

Why 60p? DVD specification is interlace only!!!
DVD spec supports 23.97 or "24P" progressive pull-down also.

I agree with Barry... you'll need to decide if which medium you'll be delivering to most and how important archiving for the future is to you and your footage. Having progressive Source material has more flexibility in post delivery and workflow in my opinion.

720p vs 1080i is least of your worries when delivering to DVD. The bigger obstacle to image quality is your HD-to-SD workflow process. I'll be encouraging all my clients to buy a cheap blu-ray player next season for those who don't have one already.
