GH3 What do you want to see in a GH3/GH2 comparison?

Hey Guys,

I picked up my GH3 yesterday and am putting it to use today on a television commercial where we will shooting lots of 1080/60p. Will also have my GH2 there as a backup and on downtime/tomorrow would like to do some side by side comparisons for my blog - www.noamkroll.com

Let me know if you'd like to see anything in particular. I was planning on a high ISO test, rolling shutter test and DR as well as comparing resolution on both at 1080/24p. Open to suggestion for additional tests! Also keep in mind my GH2 is hacked with Flowmotionv2

Roughly the same framing with ETC and without. What lenses do you have available? A 12-35 or 35-100 should work pretty well for such a test. Having a really high quality lens is pretty important as the kit lenses tend to blow up in this sort of test with the ETC.

Cheers,
Pete

I would love to see how it looks without Lumix glass! ;) Anything Nikkor, Zeiss, FD or whatever beautiful MF glass you can get your hands on would be greatly appreciated by me!

+1

Yes please. Anything non-lumix would be really great to see. If you have a Sigma 30mm or any Zeiss glass, that would be priority #1 if I had the camera myself.

I'll throw my name into the DR hat. I do a lot of low light shooting, and I'd love to see if the GH3 is better able to "see" into the shadows than the GH2.

Thanks for the suggestions. GH3 blew me away today, it is a bigger step above the GH2 than I expected. ISO 1600 is remarkably clean, DR is noticeably better, the 60p slow mo looks incredible and the grain resembles a c300 - Not to mention the camera's build quality and improved menus.

Didn't have enough time for a lot of testing today, but I will definitely get to it tomorrow. Will not be using any Lumix glass. The only Lumix glass I own is the Lumix Leica 25mm 1.4, which is nice but is rarely used.

Today I primarily shot on: SLR Magic 12mm 1.6, Zeiss 50mm 1.4 and a vintage Nikon 105mm 2.8. I'll likely use these for the tests tomorrow as well.

Wow, sounds great! If anyone knows any place online where I can purchase (except ebay) please let me know. I have a shoot in the next week or two and want to use it.
Please post pics and videos, also awesome blog you have.

Just a simple moire/aliasing test. Some are suggesting the 12-35 Panasonic reveals aliasing because it's a hyper sharp lens.(and the shots with aliasing I've seen were done on that lens) It would be nice for everyone to see a true test with a different optic. Also, and not a test here, but could you give your impressions of the ALL I vs the other options on board. Congratulations on your camera, and thanks!

On the GH2 that lens causes Moire and Aliasing.... I hate it, I rented it twice on different occasions and couldn't use it. On the flip side I have been using the Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 lens and I really like it for wide establishing shots. Really nice and sharp and minimal to no aliasing compared to other panasonic lenses, here's a frame grab from the 14mm on the GH2. I could never do this on Canon Dslr.

I don't want to see any comparison at all! Is a total waste of time. I just want to be able to get my camera as soon as possible and start shooting with it. The GH3 is going to be an improved camera all around, that's it. There is no need whatsoever for comparisons. Do people really think that Panasonic is going to put out a GH2 with a GH3 label on the front? Really? The GH3 is going to be very powerful out of the box. With improved everything. That is what the engineers at Panasonic get paid for.

Well then we all might as well log off and turn off our internet....... Truth is we all know GH3 is better but comparison tests actually shows us how/where. Also gives many a reason to want to upgrade or not.

Don't listen to him noam, I and others ABSOLUTELY want to see a good side by side or just any kind of decent comparison. Even if it just gives us an idea of what each camera looks like in similar situations.

As for me, while the GH3 on paper is undoubtedly the superior camera, I'm someone who will continue using the GH2 for certain reasons. I feel that the GH2 has a more organic image and better motion cadence than the GH3. Others could care less about this, and would much rather have a vibrant, sharp and low noise image and looks great in low light above all else. Different strokes for different folks.

As for other people on this forum, each person has their own requirements and needs in a camera. The fact that the GH3 out performs the GH2 in MANY areas is kind of irrelevant to me, as I secretly would rather shoot on the GH2 than the F3, FS100, AF100 and many other "superior" cameras- simply because I'm THAT attracted to the image. It comes down to personal preference, I could care less about specs.

Exactly. There may be some who are considering either a GH3, or simply buying a used cheaper GH2 instead for a second cam.

Really? In a matter of weeks everybody is going to have to have a GH3. Count on it.

Superior But the 25/30P & 50/60P frame rates, not blu ray compatible[except the latest players]without tiresome conversion,If this is true my GH2 with HBR 25P in a wrapper plus standard lumix lenses, but af is nice at times.

Open to suggestion for additional tests!

A wide test with a distant detailed scene like a city skyline would be great. Even though my wide lenses are sharp this is where my Canons seems to have the most trouble.

I will look forward to seeing any detailed tests and comparisons. I don't agree with the other post that would rather not see comparisons. We know all these cameras can shoot pretty pictures, but having a bench mark to compare to is how I decide where to upgrade. It was a side by side test between a hacked GH-2 and a 60D that got me interested in the GH3 in the first place.
The BMCC looks out of the picture for another year for me, and with Canon taking baby steps at this point a GH3 looks promising over another Canon.

One question. has Panasonic continued producing two different bodies, one NTSC and the other PAL?

Thanks
