What do you want in the next version of Cinestyle?

So I emailed Technicolor as follows

"Hi, i've been a cinestyle user on my 7d ever since it came out...and i love it. However while I do love it, many users including myself HATE the fact that this Picture style is SO noisy. Are there any plans to make an updated version that greatly reduces the noise?"

They replied Promptly and said:

"
Hi Darren,

This one was a tough call on our part. What to compromise for? Noise floor or better highlight handling. We chose highlight handling for version 1.0 of CineStyle. We could create another version of the CineStyle curve if more people wanted it.

How would you vote? Two CineStyle picture styles for the Canon EOS DSLR’s or just one?

The Technicolor CineStyle Team"

I replied:
"Oh i'd vote 2. There are many users who feel its 2 noisy, but as you said...i certainly love the dynamic range and the faithful skintones i can get out of it. It would be interesting to see a lower noise floor version. I'll start a thread/topic on DVXuser.com and send you a link to it so u can see what professionals and semi pros are saying about what they'd want in a cinestyle version 2."

So post your requests/opinions/gripes here and I'll give them the link. Maybe we can get another version of cinestyle.

I would love a slightly less noisy cinestyle personally. Especially for using it at higher ISOs. I could easily live with a little less highlight detail in exchange for better blacks. I know now when im color correcting i start by pulling out a little bit of the highlights and letting them clip so clearly there is more information there than i need, while i could use that data down in the blacks.

Options would be nice, but I just don't see the noise you guys are talking about. Of course I tend to do just the opposite, step one for me is crushing the shadows back down, maybe not to where they would be in "standard", but but crushed back down for sure.

it certainly is noisy for my tastes. I don't shoot anything over 640 for paid shoots. Would be kool to be able to push the ISO a bit more (on the 7d)..well for me that is. For idle stuff I can go to 1600 with neutral PP dialed down.

(5D here) I tend to stay at 640 and below as well, but I'll go 1250 without much issue.

a little off topic, but if you are shooting with 60D, stick with 160, 320, 640, 1600. Yes, 1600 is cleaner than 800 or 1250.

does the 60d have those ISO's though? I duno. I know I used my fried's t3i and it didn't...unless you use Magic Lantern. But yes those are the ISO's to stick with...and 1250 is cleaner than 1600. so its 160,320,640,1250. I dont usually go above that. for messing around i'll go to 1600..but thats just messing around. If I had neat video plugin I'd go to 1250 on paid shoots knowing I could clean it up...but since i don't, 640 is the limit for me.

^^ a bit surprising, right? but it's good to know. ^^

Back to topic. I am just not sure if I would need another version of cinestyle. I would not give up better highlight handling for less noise. There are ways to clean noise in the post, but there isn't any way to recover from blown up highlights.

surprising indeed.

Well noise was my gripe (among other people)...but this is also open to any other suggestions as to what people may want to see in another version.

@jambredz,

Yes, 60d has those iso and look at the video linked below to determine which iso is cleaner between 800, 1250 and 1600.

It's not my test however.

Flawed test. It appears that high ISO noise reduction is enabled on that camera. If there were anything other than black in the frame, you would see an attendant loss of detail above 1600 ISO.

It's a mistake to give credence to random internet "tests" - most of the testers don't have the technical chops in their methodology to draw useful conclusions from the results.

well this independent test supports it. https://vimeo.com/15875333 in anycase this is easy enough for anyone to test themselves.

Another test that doesn't specify all parameters, and contradicts previous ISO noise tests. Take it with a grain of salt. It's obvious to me what's going on there, draw your own conclusions if you must, but don't lose sight of logic.

High ISO noise reduction is enabled by default on the 60D.

Yes anyone can test for themselves, and many more qualified testers have done so and had different results.

My experience on a 60D is that 800 is cleaner and sharper than 1600, but 1250 is noisier.

Back to the subject. YES! 2 versions of Cinestyle at least for now. They should immediately release a quick version with a more moderate curve.

Then they should update the colors and release v2 profiles.

I have been shooting cinestyle -4-2 0 0 and have had great results. I'm usually shooting 320 at the highest, but have pushed to 1250 in an emergency. I haven't noticed much noise, but I guess if it hasn't jumped off the screen I'm not worried about it. Haven't gotten any complaints from clients so far. Maybe it's time to shoot some tests of my own and get a closer look. Till then I won't loose sleep over it.

I have been shooting Cinestyle since it came out (7D). One thing I'd want is a better rendition of reds in the image. Another DP and I were talking last night and we were talking about the "Canon red" and how much we disliked it. Other than that I love the PS.

I'd also call for less noise: this is the drawback that led me to discard CineStyle and create my Flaat picture styles
