What do I use to edit from now until June?

Hi
Was holding off buying FCP (glad I did considering the new price) until NAB. Now that its official and a release has been set in June, not sure what I should do.
I have 2 projects right now that need editing and not about to shell out big bucks for the old(current) version of FCP.

I could use a copy of After Effects to color grade(since I plan b purchasing AE anyways), but pretty sure its almost impossible to edit in AE.
I have no intention of purchasing Premiere, and a 30 day demo has expired.

And iMovie is totally inadequate for my needs.
Suggestions?

Just a reminder. The forum is about assisting people in their workflow.

Stay professional, and assist the OP with his inquiry.

This forum is not going tolerate arguments in support of or critical of Apple, or any other company about marketing decisions.

All that does it generate noise and posturing, and does nothing to advance the discussion.

thanks

If buying a copy of something is out of the question, best look for an editor. Craigslist, posting at your school etc. Might be a great way to find a collaborator for future projects too.

In answer to the OP question i would wipe my computer and reinstall a trial of CS5 before i spent money on anything. Or look for someone willing to unload there current copy of FCP7 for cheep in anticipation of FCPX. Or in the interest of due diligence use bootcamp and try out something like sony vegas or Edius.

Yeah, you're in a tough spot. Can you get a copy of Final Cut Express? Does it do enough for you? You could always download Media Composer 5.5. to trial, or wait until Adobe 5.5 drop and download that trial (it hasn't been released yet, has it?).

If you trialed the CS5 suite, then you might be able to just trial Premiere Pro as a stand alone (it worked for me with photoshop and Illustrator) You could even try a different version of the suite, Master vs Production Premium, etc

Like someone else said above, adobe just announced monthly subscription for their products -- you can pay $59 a month to use it until the new final cut comes out. I think premier pro even has a "use final cut keyboard shortcuts" option to make its functionality similar. all this being said, I have never used premier pro, but this may be a viable option for me as I'm in the same boat.

Wow...Thats pretty interesting.
re subscription, yes, the way to go IF 5.5 were available today or tomorrow...but who knows?

a controversial $299.
Blurs the distinction between 'consumer' and 'professional'.

Apple has publicly admitted they know they have more FCP users then seats sold. I think this is a way to help combat that user base that does not pay.

I tend to look at what a program does rather than what it costs to assess whether it is professional.

A good example would be Fotomagico Pro, which runs less $80.00, and does better pan/scan of photos than programs costing hundreds more.

Why would the cost of FCP X be a factor on whether it is a professional editor or a consumer editor?
