GH2 What causes this color banding in the sky?

I don't know , but it ceretainly looks terrible. Check your settings, gotta be something in there to correct that that mess.

Bad lighting...kidding
looks like it might be the optics due to the distortion, combined with the 8bit codec.
don't quote me on that though

The Suns setting here in LA and I just checked my Gh2 and I also have the banding. I can make it go away with a higher ISO or by using the F1.4 50mm primer.

Good catch, maybe a higher bit rate will solve this problem as it looks like the camera has a hard time resolving the colour fade and light drop off that you get at dawn and sun set.

I used a 14 year old Panasonic 3ccd DVC camera to record the sky as the sun set and it was perfectly smooth with zero banding. What? How can a old DVC camera smooth out the colour and the GH2 can't?

More important than the banding caused by 8 bit color - is the chem trails left by the NWO in the sky!

hi robertwerden,

I'm not familiar with the video format that GH2 creates when it records a video. What if you play your original file on your computer versus playing the video that was re-encoded by Vimeo?

Banding can be caused by not enough data captured. Apple Trailers if you pay attention to their trailers have banding as well. They compress it a lot. That gives an idea. :)

LMAO, i WAS THINKING THE SAME THING. Damn, Blackout. You don't miss a beat man. Oh, and by the way. I loved the dino in front of the mac store. Funny as heck. You crack me up dude. Now back to the thread.

You can down load the original MTS from the link on vimeo. I see it exactly the same as the vimeo conversion.
Im pretty sure it is exposure settings somewhere. I need to spend the day tomorrow playing with each setting as well as filters. I have seen other videos from GH2 users that don't show any gradient artifacts so I think there is just a setting im missing somewhere.

Hi
I have a UV filter and ND8 filter added to the lens of my GH1 (13) - this does seem to help but my Canon HG21 camcorder is "better" at shooting the sky without banding.
Cheers
Paul

Surely there's got to be some kind of software that can blend 8-bit color into a wider gradient - similar to what anti-aliasing accomplishes. It doesn't need to add more data that obviously doesn't exist, just smooth the existing data out. Is that even possible?

Its the Reptilians Teraforming the atmosphere! I have a Chemtrail video you would not believe. I live in a flight path by LAX.

I could swear the 14 year old DVC camera has 9 bit colour processing

Avisynth + Grad2funDB (or rather GradFunkMirror) will successfully smooth out GH2 banding. From there you should render to a 10-bit codec (or lossless), otherwise you'll reintroduce the banding slightly when you start to colour grade.

The original author only intended the Grad plugin to be used for real time playback of compressed content, but I believe the principle is the same (after all, the GH2's codec is primarily for distribution rather than acquisition).

I answered the OP's question. 8 bit color is what causes the banding. Apply some dithering in post. Done.

Even so, it shouldn't look like that. That's extreme.

Do you have "Intelligent Exposure" turned on? Try disabling that and see if it makes a difference. There's obviously something there that's just plain out of whack.

yeah I thought it looked a bit extreme too but figured that was a poor internet encode on top of a bad banding shot. which just multiplies things...
I've had very good luck in Vegas 10 getting rid of any banding problems by going to 32 bit full color mode and just applying a few select filters.
