what can't the firestore do...

Function when dropped...or REALLY shaken. Work in the EXTREME COLD and EXTREME HEAT (Firestore on the Iditerod? HA!)

Function without additional power.

Function QUIETLY.

Work after going thru a washing machine. Made my heart stop when I found it in the bottom of the washing machine. Apparently it was still in my pocket. BUT...I wouldn't recommend others test this.

It is HDD based so there are moving parts that can get worn out.

It requires a power supply, and FW cable.

It's bulky compared to a p2 card.

It has the capability with the latest firmware to shoot most of the DVCProHD frame rates.

I prefer solid state acquisition represented by p2 cards.

What can a FireStore do that a P2 card can't? Record 11.25 hours in 720/24PN with a 250Gb version--for less than a 64gb P2 card.

Yet is loud, requires power, cannot withstand dropping or hard bumping, firewire cables tend to pop out...and the company declared bankruptcy.

Hmmm...longer record time...stable robust recording medium. I'll take the latter thank you.

No doubt that P2 is more impervious to shock and built-in for best reliability, but a 64Gb card is probably going to be around $2500, it would take four of these or $10,000 to have the capacity of a 250Gb FireStore, which is less than a 1/4 of the P2 price.

I still get marketing emails from Focus Enhancements, it seems that they are still in business. I have used FS-100's with my HDX900 on many shoots and the only problem I had was vibration from a camera car. Noise has not been a problem, FS-100's have their own batteries, although I power them off of my HDX900. Not perfect, but they have served my clients well.

okay, i guess i should re-phrase the question. if i'm using a firestore, what features am i not going to be able to use, that i could use if i were recording to P2?

thanks for the answers so far, they have been informative and amusing
:)

Metadata, and playback by thumbnail, and view your playback footage in HD (unless you're using an HPX170).

I love these discussions. What people who use P2 always say is that it is loud or needs another battery, or you can't see meta-data and yada yada yada. If you shoot P2 where are you off loading to? A laptop. What does a laptop need? A battery and also a nice warm environment where you can work. As for the noise, it has never been a problem on any shoot I have been on. Barry Green will tell you if you use proper miking technique it shouldn't be a problem. As for meta-data, I'm sure that it is important on some shoots but here again at the level I am at I don't have clients asking for it or even know what it is. I do have a lot of clients, the Motorola shoot I did last year, specifically ask to use the Firestore because of its simple off load procedure, the producer brought a MAC laptop.
I think maybe and this is just my opinion, that P2 is more PC friendly and the Firestore is more MAC friendly, at least that is what I have found. Consider also the fact that Apple does not offer a laptop with a PCMCIA slot anymore, very sad about that.
So what to use? Pick one and live with the compromises that each bring to your production. Oh yeah forgot, with a P2 shoot you need time to swap out the card, acknowledging the fact that there are 32gig and soon 64 gig card either here or on the way, but you need to take this into the equation.

So there it is. Let the flaming begin.

Thanks again everyone...

I think the only flaming you'll hear today is people's heads bursting into flames trying to figure out how much a new scarlet package will cost with all the modules....nice of them not to post prices of anything but the brains...

I'll be using both P2 and firestore, just trying to figure out when and where to use each...
