Taking an overall look at the current high end cameras and the ones in the works like the Phantom, what I find so satisfying is that all these 100,000+ cameras don't top the RED thus far.. yet they cost so much more. I know I am comparing something that is not even out yet to tried and true existing gear..but I have full faith that the RED TEAM will be able to pull it of.
At some point RED may be outdone on specs, but will it ever be outdone on price as well?
I have been enjoying the responses thus far in this board..and one topic that seems to pop up frequently is the.. "why all the hype? a wonder camera won't make your movie an oscar contender! stop getting excited..just use what you have....etc"
In another thread I saw the following question:
"what is a RED going to do for you?"
RED will cause a drastic paradigm shift. Over time, once reality sets in and if RED truly delivers...RED is going to bring down the prices of ALL hd camcorders. It will cause a rise in competition..and the end result will be better cameras and lower prices. It's lose lose situation for camera makers like SONY, but a WIN WIN WIN WIN situation for us consumers. No, this camera won't make us BETTER filmmakers. RED will give low budget filmmakers an opportunity to use a camera that was previously unrealistic (I know I would NEVER be able to afford the Cinealta, nor would I ever fork out for one even if I had the money..or go through the trouble of renting one and having to learn how to use it). It WILL make our movies look better. This isn't a bad thing. Plus, I'll take a stance similar to Jim Jannard on this camera. Even if it doesn't do well, he is satisfied with just building a camera he is happy with. I myself, will be just as satisfied with being able to use this camera to fulfill my own personal filmmaking fetishes regardless of my "success." I love filmmaking and I absolutely LOOOOVE good quality video. I love the footage that the Sony Cinealta and the Varicam produces. With the 17.5k price point, I can now have the opportunity to work with that level of quality equal to, if not better than with 4k possibilities. I think we are going to see remarkable looking films made on lower budgets thanks to the RED. I think that this camera might ignite some people to get into filmmaking. Soooo anyways.. you can't ever hate on Jim for trying and you can't complain about us RED fans for dreaming big.
