What are you listening to now ?

LOL I had no clue they were desert noir. They sound like half 'band' half surf music and half 'circus music' (accordion quite a lot) Try, 'where the water flows' and 'minas de cobre' the acoustic one. Fantastic band these guys.

Still listening to Ennio Morricone,

but right now 'One Silver Dollar' is on repeat.

Indeed about the 80's films. And documentaries. The strange thing is that when ppl want to do something else, it doesn't fly, because funding is french or european, and they're never interested in work that doesn't showcase or sell the mideastern situation. It's really really sad. My lady works in the business side of the field and I keep seeing her work with all these artists under these conditions. I don't work with relations or friends or lovers thank heavens. She's had it too, quitting her job and moving back to open a pub.

Thank god for DSLRs. Now I can just spend money on my actors. And do what I want. I mean it was a camcorder before and I was happy with it.

But gunslingers in beirut? Yeah, won't fly.

The crazier thing is that now, the people that make all these war films, weren't around for it, never been through it, and are really thinking they're being patriotic. I mean I love pink floyd, but I don't feel I'm in a position to really be a die hard, cause I wasn't around for them, period. I am a child of the nineties, I love sergio leone, but tarantino's number one, cause that's gonna be classic when I'm forty. Investing in cool I call it LOL. But yeah, the authenticity has gone down and it's plain exploitation now.

There were a group of NGO's doing a documentary about the palestinian camps, one situation there involved the inhabitants needing a power generator that cost 15,000 dollars. The documentary to raise awareness was budgeted at 40,000 dollars. Buy the generator. The documentary never got made of course.

I wish people would just do what they want. Again, the age of 'you are, or rather HAVE to be where you're from'. My students are doing a good job of breaking away. It will do the situation a lot better if we start acting like individuals IMHO. At least in this field. I mean the situation is so dire here where it's dire that IMHO it calls for immediate action rather than capitalizing on the opportunity. Buy the generator. and save 25,000.

It really is my biggest problem, thank heavens it's one that I just get lost in my work to get away from.

hence, gunslingers in beirut, cursed and missing artifacts, and SAS assassination techniques, bob mundenesque dialog, and lots more outrageous stuff. It is fun. fun is the cure.

Cool is the bubble they can't burst

;)

@ greymog

I'm listening to Calexico, thanks to you turning me on to them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t46dvudrp8

Wiki calls them Desert Noir, among other things, maybe that's why they sound good in the Mideast? haha, they sound good in tropical Miami, too.

greymog, thanks for sharing the other stuff, too. It's interesting that you don't feel compelled to make a typical "Beirut film." I remember seeing several of those at festivals in the 80's, during and after the war- the blown out shells of buildings always costarring.

Oh, and I listen to myself on guitar, but that just gets me to put on something better...

Oil and Blood by The Unsettlers from the free "Hymns From The House Of Horror" compilation album on ruemorgueradio.com
The Unsettlers are my new favorite band... this week at least.

So how about Leone meets Tarrantino- The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly in the Mideast desert??? In DSLR Cinemascope!
No good guys, no bad guys, everyone is gray.

And the music could be a mix of Morricone and Calixico?

I mean I love pink floyd, but I don't feel I'm in a position to really be a die hard, cause I wasn't around for them, period.

And I wasn't around for Citizen Kane, so I can't appreciate it?
You wouldn't watch Apocalypse Now because it's older than you? ;^)
Good film and good music transcends time, doesn't it?

I hear ya. "Causes" and "Charities" often spend way more than they give.
I think the US law requires only 10% of funds raised to be spent on the stated cause to be considered a charity.
On the other hand, a well managed doc might have raised funds for 10 generators, or more.

But to get back on topic, I think Calixico mixes Mexican traditional, post rock and yeah, maybe a little little surf.
I even hear a little Morricone in Calixico...

I listened to 2 versions of Minas de Cobre:
The version used in this crazy animation El Kabong Rides Again, check it out ****:2vrolijk_08:

Ahhh, gotta love Tal Wikenfeld.

This one in her, cough, younger year(s), haha. Maybe a couple years a bat for her, if that at most...

When you're talking about a live act, it's not really comparable to a film. Projectors, sound, and theaters being roughly equivalent, your external experience of Citizen Kane will be fairly consistent from one viewing to the next. But experiencing a live Floyd performance in a particular venue will never be that similar to the experience of listening to a recording.

But I agree that good art transcends time. Of course, so can lousy art but that's a different topic.

Good art is timeless, absolutely.

But the internal experience shades any performance, live or recorded, true?

Recorded/filmed art, (while relatively unchanged from playback to playback) is somewhat like live performance, in that the viewer/listener hears/sees/feels different things as their life experience has changed.

Maybe I like Citizen Kane (or Dark Side of the Moon) more (or less) than I did 20 years ago.
And then there's live theater to add to the mix (and plays that resemble films, and films that resemble plays), but that's for another forum...

But what am I listening to now? My Avid. Maybe some Yo Yo Ma or David Grisman later to relax...

Gotta give it up for Rodney King. I hate seeing people make fun of him. Pretty cool guy in my books.
