What are you listening to now ?

You can comment on every tune...I think you're the boss in this thread, so you just let me know if the 90s/2000s gets too much, ha.

But every piece of music I will post here will come with a quick piece of knowledge/history lesson.

Two notes about Blink:

(1) I was obsessed with Tom DeLonge (Blink's guitar player) when I was younger and it's why I started to play guitar. As an adult I understand he's like a level 1 compared to some level 10 guitar gods out there, but it was the personality and the time and culture. I still have a yellow Fender in a case with a bunch of stickers on it that I refuse to sell.

(2) That Dammit video has their original drummer, Scott. Supposedly one night before a show he had to fly home for a family emergency early in their career and was replaced by another band's drummer, Travis Barker (yeah, the one currently dating Kourtney K). Tom and Mark also argued with Scott a lot about some personal stuff and eventually thought Travis was a really good fit and ended up keeping him as the drummer and the rest is history...Blink went on to make millions and millions of dollars that the old drummer never saw.

By the way...how is it 25 years later that I am just now realizing SG's Wannabe was a one-take steadicam shot!!

Summer of '03...just like in many places around the country - and world - you sure as heck couldn't go walking around wherever you pleased in New York City.

And you definitely didn't want to get caught in the wrong hood.

But something different was in the air that year...there was a new artist (new to the world) discovered by Eminem and Dre called 50 cent (fifty, fiddy).

When I tell you that anyone and everyone bumped fiddy that summer (especially in New York), I mean anyone and everyone. Even if you had a trust fund and were just visiting from Greenwich, CT for a Knicks or Rangers game, you knew fiddy.

There were a lot of hard rappers after Pac and Biggie but 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' shook up the hip-hop world like no other.

If you care, read up on the Vitamin Water deal that happened in which he allegedly made around 100 million overnight after Coca-Cola acquired Glacéau...crazy stuff.

NSFW.

[Don't worry, not gonna be doing this everyday now, ha...last one for a week.]

During my summer trips to Poland when I was a kid, I always brought back candy for my friends, but they all loved American music so much and couldn't wait to see which CDs I had.

Backstreet Boys made the girls cry like no one else.

You could seriously lose your mind being so famous. Larger than life god-like stardom that just doesn't quite feel the same in the social media era.

...Don't worry, not gonna be doing this everyday now, ha...last one for a week...
hahaha. I think I've said that before many times too lolll.
I'm digging it so please do anytime.

I've never been a pop guy and def never listened to the Spice Girls. Granted I'm seeing and hearing it from a different perspective now but it's actually really good on a number of levels.
And even some of the little scene gags in there are making me laugh. //Having a few a.t.m now. haha. That old lady rocking it scene is still cracking me up and the very brief shot of the guy in the distance chugging back a wine bottle, among many others. It's a very well directed and funny vid. I'm starting to love it. -Cheers.
///[Damn it hard to hear what they are saing, Edit # 4] When the little kid gaws at the girls singing in the intro and they stop singing then one of the girls sais as she's walking away 'What's the matter there then? and mutters to herself a rhetorical question "Starting too high?". Anyways, it's funny.
////Oh lol. I have to share an old story. I was playing keys in a bar once in a bar band and this lady gets up on stage and sits on my lap, as I'm playing, all drunked up and acting like she's playing it. Then starts kinda humping me like doing a...ya know...and at that point I'm thinking to myself "I can get killed for this" so I had to stop and escort her off the stage without smiling and return to what I was doing. A guy can get shot for stuff like that by a jealous husband. F man, I'm just playing. Jeeez eh? I'm glad she had a good time but man...:) -Beers.

And yes, those stories of people reaching fame too fast and too quick, did indeed f up alot of them.

An old classic that was huge when it came out: -Cheers.

haha...I only know that one song from the Spice Girls because it was so massively popular. I randomly came across it while diving down the 90s YouTube universe at 4am and noticed there were no cuts as I started watching it.

But in general, that kind of music was in its prime in that decade, which arguably started with MJ and Thriller and MTV in the 80s.

Yeah. That old lady is cracking me up good tonight right now. I could have a few with her.
Look, I've been running out of material here for years and DLD has been very cool but yeah if anyone has anything to listen to that they like then fire them up. I want to hear what you like. -Beers? hehe. -Cheers
I might change my title bar to "Am I in **** yet?" lol because...oh I better shut up. Lol. Ha. Yeah, fire up anything anyone. :)

You don't want to get me started...lol.

Besides a few random posts here and there, I mainly watched this thread over the years because I couldn't contribute much to the direction it mostly went.

But if you want content, I can single-handedly turn this thread upside down with another 276 pages. lol

As much as I love the Wannabe song from the SGs, I'll have to end the night on an American artist...New York's...Long Island's own, Mariah Carey.

Britney Spears will forever be my #1, but MC was the first female singer I listened to and these two songs are quite frankly two of the best of all time. Top 20 in life.

This is 1995 or 1996, pretty sure. I almost went to this show if it's the one I'm thinking of.

Vladimir Vyssotskij was arguable the most talented man of he 20th century. He acted on stage and screen to much acclaim but received most of his accolades for some 600 songs that he wrote and performed "bard style". His songs were not played on the radio during his lifetime but, at the same time, he was a favorite of both Brezhnev and Andropov, who tried to save his behind from numerous misadventures. At at the age of 40, years of drug and alcohol abuse took its toll.

His songs are very difficult to translate into English ... which is why many have tried. I'll use the existing versions that can be found online, with some corrections of my own. I stray quite far away from the literal.

This is the link to translations.

This one is called a "War Memorial" (or, literally, the "common grave site").

Lyrics -

They don't put up crosses on communal graves,
And widows don't scream, shedding tears;
But flowers are laid on the sites of these flames
And sadness remains, it appears.

The ground was shaking, full of blood and hate
Where granite and marble are now plated.
There isn't a single or separate fate,
Their spirits are one. Integrated.

The flame ties us all like a soul in a bag,
We're lucky our bodies don't smoulder,
A burned out village, a ruined Reichstag,
Memorial wreath to a soldier.

Illustrious crowds don't visit the place,
They can't ever give their blessing.
They never have time to spent on these graves
They're above it all, I am guessing.

An oldy to start the night. I believe that music is great memory trigger and these days I need all of the memory help I can get haha.

A memory post here: I was 13-14ish. A friends sister that I met one day was the prettiest girl I had ever seen.
I saw her literally everywhere from thereon.
As part of my accordian lesson and accordian band thing I had to play at various promotions for the teachers business in other towns including at the booth at the fair grounds ect.

I'd always see her and her dad stop and watch me for a couple minutes. Even out of town. It just seemed so unreal.

One day at a camp site 30 miles away while sitting in the canteen with a bud, a girl sits down across from me, smiles and sais "My sister likes you."
I just brushed it off because I didn't know who she was or who she was referring to.
She sais "She's standing outside." I asked her who she was and she sais (the girl I was reffering to above) and I was shocked. Speechless actually.

The girl was too afraid to come in because she didn't know if I liked her or not. Her sister kept asking me if I liked her and I was just speechless.

Finally my dad came into the canteen breaking the awkward silence and yells "Time for your music lesson" meaning that he had to take me into town for my lesson.
Walking out the door with dad, there she was standing there, too afraid to come in. She had no idea how much her beauty and great personalty intimidated MEEE.

And for the decades that followed, everytime we see each other, even just in passing on the street (and even if she hears my voice she'll turn) we lock eyes and remember and think what might have been.
And she still has the prettiest eyes I've ever seen even at 60+.

This song was on the Juke Box in those days including at that canteen.

Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) by Looking Glass. Live vocal to track

Okay, let's move on and check out some new bands. Thanks. :)

Jaco Pastorius deserves a mention. A former bass player would always mention him in music conversations. I don't know his music myself. It's impossible to know everything, I say to myself. :)
(I'm working up to the new bands haha.)

Weather Report - Birdland (Jaco Pastorius)

Oh, Look at the rig in the background @ 2:09. It looks just like Keith Emersons old Moog rig.
Arp (I beleive it was) also had something similar in those days. The patch bays were kind of a thing back then.

I don't know alot, if anything, about this area of music so I may have to buy NorBro a few beers and ask him to post some new songs that he likes.
I'm into it and want to hear it, it's just that I'm not that familiar with 'what I don't know'.

Side note: I'm getting the feeling these days that Rap is very popular or even more so maybe than it used to be? Because wherever I walk the music that I hear
blasting loud from cars and blasting loud from homes, as I walk by, is all Rap. So maybe someone can post a few of those that they listen too. I'll lay off the board for a bit now. ;)

Pantera - Mouth For War (Official Music Video)

It is more popular now because it's different.

Rap has changed a lot and it's now split into different categories and styles versus say the 90s, which was mostly hard, gangsta rap.

2000s saw some experimental hip-hop, but a lot of it was still influenced by different territories and lifestyles. NY, LA, Texas, Florida, etc...they all had their flows and spoke about certain things.

Mark: Your second vid sais that it's not available in my country and the link just brings me to a basically ad page. So...
...maybe in the future when everyone is posts a YT vid could they give the title of the song first above the YT link for instances like this? It only takes a sec and allow us to find the song? :)
Thanks man. I had another semi oldy on my mind that I was going to post then got thrown off. Damn, its on the tip of my tongue. Uno Momento Por Favour.;)
Gawd I hate when that happens. It'll come to me in a bit. Dammit haha.
Got it... in a sec.. (and then my P.C crashed. Gawd it's alwys something lol. F. :)

Golden Earring - Radar Love (Official Music Video [HD])

//Haha. Another Rickenbacker. That's two songs tonight that I posted with Rikki's. Kinda funny to myself. :)
///And he still has the pick guard on it. That's the first thing that everyone takes off. Did he get paid for that or something? Hahaha.

The Kansas Masque album was and remains my fave. The Carry On song was i.m.o (not from the Masquw LP) was an attempt to get some commercial airplay which they did. It wasn't the sound of Kansas i.m.o.
And I could elaborate on that but that's not a road I want to go down right now because...I just dont.
Great band. This is thier most recognizable song (commercial hit) and a good one.

Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son (Live from Canada Jam)

C'mon Man. I want to here some 2020 bands right now and take my mind off this ****. Everyone else is sleeping right so no worries. If you don't do it then I will and I'd rather not. Please? :) Rock me.

Fine. I understand. I'll keep the tunes tonight to this thread and wont bump anything. K? Thanks.

Dirty Honey - California Dreamin' [Official Video]

//lol. I apparently already know that one and forgot. lol. Hang on and let's see...Soooory hehe. My bad. I like the groove to it though.

The title of this one sounds interesting. Let's listen to it together.

//Had to pause the below vid after 1 min just to say "Oh hell yeah. I like that. I'll refrain. That is fn good big time. Smiles non stop. :)
OMG. This girl has the gift.
Dirty Honey - Lockdown Live At The Viper Room

I don't know if anyone else watched that entirely but I love her in that. Her voice primarily ofcourse and her attitude. Singing a bit like old Joplin. Everything she sang sounded like she was talking to me and understood. First and foremost was her voice. The rest with the relatable lyrics topped it off. How does she know this s*%t at her age is what I'm thinking. Haha. Watch out for her name.

//I didn't mention the band members because I assumed it was implied. I loved the band. They rocked it to a T. K? hehehe. Jeeeze. :) Loved them.
//Havin's a few and prolly gonna hate myself tomorrow for saying this in public but f it: Playing at the Iron Horse in Kingston, at the end of the night, the owner would always come up on stage with glasses of champaine for the band members and say a few words on the mic. It was a nice thing to do really. It was a nice gesture. I was never a big fan of champain, over rated i.m.o but I'll accept free booze anytime I guess. haha. Speaking of free booze...oh I better stop here (I can hear a girl right now in my head that used to say to me "You always do that. You start a story then don't finish it." Haha. Yeah, cause...hahaha. :) It just too long. They're long stories I'm thinking and I don't think the average person would relate to it anyways. Ya know? No? See? I was right. Lol. I crack myself up sometimes.
