What are you guys using for a fluid head?

i use a 503hdv. i've bought several cheap tripods before--they're cheap for a reason. this one is much better. even though there are much better tripods out there, i can't see myself needing much more for quite some time. the 503hdv supports way more than i have at the moment

I added weight to the camera with rails, matte box and counterweight battery. It helped a lot. Weighs about 10-12 lbs now.

You can pick up so old O'connor heads on ebay that are amazingly smooth for around $300-400. They're big and unwieldy to carry around, but for me it's worth it. I got a model 30, took out two of the counterweight springs and now it's perfect for my rig. Probably have to spend at least $2000 to get anything comparable new.

They have some really nice bogen 501 and 503s at school, btu our camera is so light in wanted somthing else (and i couldnt afford how much it was anyway)

I just got the tiffen/davis and sandford FM-18 with provista. $180 shipped and came with a free folding dolly (which is really nice to)

Its as smooth as butter, fits my 7d, and even the 7d mounted on my rig just fine.

I own one. My friend owns one. It sucks. His center brace broke and the screws/hinges from mine became stripped. The "metal" wears out after so long rendering the head useless. My recommendation is to dish out for a GOOD tripod because you'll end up throwing away money on cheaper ones.

oh and +1 for the Bogens - look into the 701 too.

The 7D is not as heavy as some of the larger pro camcorders...

I've started shooting performances at distances like 40' and my tripod is not adequate for these types of pans.

How about something like this (tripod with fluid head):

Aluminum legs at that price may be worth it, but check out the movement and feel of the head compared to other tripods before buying. Also check ebay. If that unit is around $200 you may find it used for half price. If you are in NYC you can got to B&H and play with all of them set up there.

I use a 701 head and love it, no complaints. However I wish i got sturdier legs than the 190xdb legs, they are pretty light

^ is it the 701HDV or the 701RC2? That's very unfortunate to hear.. I just ordered a 701hdv and 190xprop setup.. I read that it was lighter the 055 but is it atleast sturdy enough to do panning and such?
