what are we missing in the HVX

Since it will be still a half year before the HVX will be on the market in Europe which options do we really want and can be implemented real easily into the present HVX design without getting more delay.

Flipping the image in-camera for use with 35mm adapters like the Micro35 and G35.

Heck, I think that's something the US NTSC version still has time to implement, and should if possible.

Obviously you are not in the engineering department in Osaka and have to be faced with rewriting all of the 27 format codes for this, at this late date, release is 2 months away. Not sure why everyone thinks that engineering a camera is like picking up a pencil. This is not so easy as one would like to think.

Additionally the PAL camera will be based on the same feature function set as the NTSC camera.

Dear Jan,

Instead of re-writing all 27 format codes to introduce an image flip in the recorded signal, could Panasonic-Osaka simply include instructions for the "magnet trick" in the Q/A portion of the manual? Or, do the respective "local" divisions of Panasonic write the manuals? If so, perhaps this could be implemented by the Panasonic-US Division. Just a thought.

Cheers,
Brian Wells

If it were that easy then we might include it, but it is not. Keep in mind when we first brought out the Varicam it did not do this either and it was not until the F version that it did it. If engineering was simple everyone would do it.

Best,

Jan

Not to poke fun, as I'm planning on getting a couple HVX's, but it's interesting that Canon is able to flip their viewfinder image and Panasonic isn't. I mean come on, it's Canon! They're always the last ones across the finish line. Who's next? Sony?

That said, to get the look I want with the HVX, I'll be using an adapter. I really wish there was an easier way than sticking a stupid magnet on the camera to flip the image. If the LCD can flip the image dependent on which direction it's facing, there's got to be a way to control it through the menu. If there's a way to do it, there's got to be a way to undo it.

And yes, I'm not an engineer in Osaka.

Well, as long as this feature makes it to the "200a" I'll be happy, since I can't afford an hvx right now...

To be honest, the camera seems to have a very complete set of functions. Sure, a few more frame rates might be nice, and I'd honestly prefer a lighter camera without a dv tape deck (I'm in the minority here, obviously), but I think for $6,000 it's quite a well-thought out camera.

One thing that worries me is the signal to noise ratio. Jan, if you're reading this, realize that sensetivity isn't nearly so important when you're shooting outdoors and with the dvx at 3200º white balance, outdoors footage was borderline unacceptably noisy. Even a -3db or -6db gain feature like Canon implements might help with this and still allow a high sensetivity rating to be advertised. Just as long as it's in the "200a" of course!

I'm really quite surprised by how panasonic and canon both seem to have amazing first generation products. Even Sony's FX1 was a pretty solid product for first generation. It took dv cameras quite a while to get to where they are today, yet first gen HD cameras are all coming with pretty solid feature sets.

Next up: 2/3'' CCDs. Bill Kennedy told me that (a long ways off) foveon-style sensors would replace bayer pattern and 3ccd sensors in panasonic's video line. Once this is availible, I think I'll stop envying 16mm forever.

Well I suppose the image would just need to be flipped in the LCD/EVF, but not whats recorded to tape/ps/firestore/etc. That can be corrected in post. If this is easier to implement, that would be great!
