Ok, finally ran a couple of test DL DVDs.
When compressed to 2-pass 7.5 avg. for video and using Dolby for audio, it fit nicely on a +R DL DVD. There was still room left.
The playback was only a little better than half that bit rate on a -R single layer DVD...and certainly not the dramatic results I was hoping for by doubling the bit rate. It is usable for it's purpose, but not the commercial DVD quality hoped for. It looks like a home movie.
I also exported a couple of QT files out of FCP: 43gb HD and 13gb SD. The 43gb looks absolutely great and the 13gb looks very, very, very good...so I know it was not the source.
In any case, the DVD is in Fedx' hands now...however I felt compelled to send along my usual WD passport containing the QT file.
Hopefully, I'll discover the secret that the commercial DVD guys use. (probably lots of money)
David, thanks for your help in getting this out the door on time.
