What are the benefits of converting to Prores?

I've edited in FCP with the H.264 format, and I was just curious what the benefits of converting are.

If you experience slow rendering or are unable to render "in real time" because the processor is working overboard trying to play the video real time. Converting to ProRes eliminates that. If you experience no problems, perhaps you don't need to convert for what you're doing.

So the raw camera files play smoothly for you in fcp? What computer setup do you have?

I would still change your timeline to prores when you do your final render, especially if you're doing an color correction.

ProRes is a great Intermediate to use especially if you're using a few different types of high quality footage. It's easy to handle for the most part, and is nearly lossless.
