I dont get it; I film in 1080, I use HD tape, I encode in 720 for the internet. But still it looks really bad! A lot of the shots were filmed with a crazy high shutter speed so thats why theyre so dark btw. Also, this is a canon xh a1 obviously. I am new to this forum so this looked like to right place to post this.thanks

Your footage doesn't look too bad. Some shots were under exposed, so that would cause it to be noisy. There was some frame doubling when you tried to slow the footage down.

I would make sure you turn AGC off. Use your zebras to set exposure. And maybe use a slower shutter speed. 1/48 is pretty standard when shooting 24p, although I like to shoot a little higher. You could also increase your bit rate when encoding for Vimeo.

what frame rate you shooting at? what editing system are you using. From me looking at it, it seems that you are shooting at 60i?

Yeah I was. The slow motion didnt work out as I expected but next time im going to use optical flow remapping. I actually just turned off AGC right now and set it to -3 db. I made that video with Premiere pro cs3 but had to capture the footage with imovie, but now im using cs4 and final cut studio 2 and shake. The footage just looks really blurry and not as crisp as it could. EDIT:Oh and a lot of that was shot at 1/15000 shutter speed

that's a really fast shutter speed, even for action sports. that might be why some of your shots are underexposed.

yeah i think so. it just dosent look as clear and hd quality as lots of other videos. would the underexposure cause it to look blurrier?

those aren't adapters, they're filters. based on the look of them, they're meant to taper incoming light for really bright photography. since I don't do anything of the sort, I'm curious as to what exactly those would be designed for...astronomy or photography/video of celestial bodies which are bright whilst everything in the background is dark.

you can use a filter since they're mostly used to protect the lens, but I'd go with a clear one. B&W (a german optic company) makes really good lenses, even if they are a little expensive.

You're owning a XH-A1, ain't ya? So you can give yourself the answer to your last question... If you have a look at your cam, do you see any way to remove the lens? Do you see any connection for SLR bayonet mount lenses? No?
So that's the answer. You can't use SLR lenses with your XH-A1. The only way to do so is using a 35mm-adapter. There's a forum for such adapters on this board, where you can get all the information you might need on this topic.

For the Mercury filters: Why did you use them without knowing what they do? If you have a nice cam, you should avoid putting unneeded glass in front of the cams lens. If you have to put a filter on(for saving the lens or reducing the incoming light or...), you should only use high quality filters like Heliopan or B&W .

BTW, have you read and informed yourself about the XH-A1 before buying it? Just wondering...

I get the 35mm adapter thing now. The reason I put on a filter is that it seemed like it didnt do much and I was in a place with a lot of dirt and was scared of scratching the lens and yes I did as much research as I could but really I just worked and bought it hoping to learn with it because I've never done any photography or anything involving cameras my whole life basically.

A zebra is a line that tells you what the upper limit of your exposure is so you don't over expose. Set it at about 95 IRE (100 IRE is consider completely blown out) and dial the iris down until the lines disappear. These lines aren't recorded in the final image.

Also, those filters look like an ND, a polarizer and a UV. I would not use anything except for the UV, and that's only to protect the lens. Cheap generic filter can really hurt the quality of your image.

yeah. Hey once again this might sound dumb but how would I set this IRE?

yeah i just shot some stuff doing all the things i was told to do but it still looks kind of grainy along with a few other things check it out. this is also with some color presets and post color correction and a vignette filter(i just wanted to see how it would look haha). thanks again
oh and this is with 24p if that matters at all
