What am I doing wrong? (SGBladeRR2 + DVX100b)

OK, so I think I had this thing working decently with the RotoRazor 1 that came installed, but I recently switched to RR2, in fact had to switch out the whole blade component because the original wouldnt recharge, so needless to say it was all apart, now that I have it back together, it looks terrible, I don't know what is going on, I am going to post a couple screen shots and a test video(advanced pulldown didnt work for some reason, but thats another issue). Tons of noise in the footage (check out that blue wall), if anyone can help me out here it would be appreciated, this thing is kicking my butt.

initial indoor crappy video here

newer daylight foootage here 3.29

Hi Chris,

I believe the issue is low light. Try shooting in daylight to see if this solves the noise you are getting.

is the issue noise or the soft focus? Looks like your back focus might be off, but even so you're in way too low a light level to be able to judge noise.

I'm curious as to what 35mm lens you are using and the fstop. Remember that RR2 needs more light than RR1. It's hard to tell the difference in light requirements between the two GG's when you're outdoors, but indoors, it quickly becomes apparent. It's the price you pay for a more filmic bokeh.

Regarding low light, this footage from the blade footage thread: http://www.rimeligok.no/anders/sgblade/Sgblade-limited.mov
looks great and there is some dark stuff in there, is there some general concept that im missing, my stuff from that video was definitely dark, too dark, but i feel like im missing something, why does that dark footage look no good? no noise in those shadows.

as far as lens, that was a 50mm 1.4

it definitely looks like what the others are saying, too little light.

as far as focus, also be sure that the mounting plate for the RR2 is sitting perfectly flat,
I had the one little power wire jammed one time, and it had the plane slightly off.
I was rushing, and missed it, which caused me extra time of having to redo it.

also, with focus, with an image that dark, if you're using the lcd to focus, it just makes it harder to tell
if the image is in focus while shooting.

as far as noise, I assume you didn't have gain on. are you using cinelike-D or V? that can introduce noise
even in well lit shots on darker colours, and shadows. and having the master ped set to crush the blacks
can also add noise in the gradient areas of shadows, and dark colours.

Your shooting squeeze, right?
Remember that my video (limited.mov) was exported at 2/3 of the resolution of your video, which makes it seem sharper when played as is.
It looks like you some kind of mini-interlacing going on in your vid, what was your export settings?
Are you shooting with a flip module? what zoom number is your dvx set to?

yeah the dvx turns into a grainy mess when you underexpose - especially grey walls. i have shot some stuff with grey walls that i thought would be fine. but when editing... i found the entire thing was a blocky grainy mess.

ok, made some adjustments and shot outside, i think its set up pretty well now (watch) how do you stop the vignetting? need to use a mattebox?

The instructions tell you to zoom so you are just inside the gg disc, thats where i am, is that not correct?, and these screenshots would seem to show my focus is ok?

i would say zoom in further. You want to get academy frame.

Sup up a piece of 8.5 by 11 paper horizontally on a wall and place a 50mm lens at 2 ft focus. It should fill the entire frame from left to right, then you know you've zoomed in enough.

Yeah I think you need to zoom in more..

or.. let me ask:
What is your zoom at?

on the SGpro I have the zoom at around z80..

right now i have a canon fd 28mm 2.8, i have more manual lenses on the way, can also stick a canon eos 50mm 1/4 on there, just have to switch mounts

canon lens users want to chime in here? I know certain lens series can cause issues with vignetting.

would you say this is the norm- even if using RRm2?

I think that this procedure is GG type agnostic but a means to getting academy sized image on your GG as recorded on your cam. We use this to verify also if the 35mm lens markings hold true. -if not then collimation is off.
