What about the Rebel? Why isn't anyone talking about it?

I'm debating between the T1i and K-x. I guess with the T1i just render the 30p to 24p granted it's an extra step you have to do but as a B-cam I probably wouldn't mind. I wish there was a great comparison between the K-x and T1i but I haven't found anything yet. I've seen video's on vimeo for the K-x but so far I like the T1i better from what I have seen.

If you arent invested in either system, get the Canon. You wont find a comparison on the Canon vs the Pentax because there really is none. Canon has the superior optics, processor, lens selection, sensor...you name it. Nikon is really the only brand that can compete. The lens selection alone should make the decision easy. Canon's lenses are worlds better and there are alot more to choose from. Do you really need full 1920x1080 at 24p? 720/30p is great on the T1i.

Well, you are discussing about the Pentax and the Rebell,
what about the GH-1?
phillip bloom, he did lovely stuff with this camera!
You can get it from 1200-1400 € inkl. a quit good kit lens,
as well as nikon and canon manual lenses work fine with it.

i think this is the "cheap" alternativ.
and it does 60 fps. awsome slomotion!

visit philip bloom on vimeo and check it out,
this is shoot with the GH-1 too!

huh?
gh-1 price and rebelt1i price arent exactly similar. And especially gh1 and KX price.
Rebel body is now 380 GBP.With 24p it would be huge hit.

I am bummed you can't even see what shutter speed or iso it is setting. This is tough to work with even with manual lenses. I also had serious moire and aliasing problems when I tried to shoot with the kit lens due to the deep focus (I managed to create a worst case scenario shooting with kit lens outside on a sunny day before I read barry's aliasing article :)). It seems like they are just going to let this one die... I am still holding out hope that magic lantern will be updated for the t1i.

Canon has been stupid to not update the Rebel with new firmware. They are gonna lose customers to the GH-1, when it becomes cheaper.

Its a $600 camera. Cheaper than Canon's low end video cameras, just what are you expecting? They are not going to load a camera that cheap with tons of features, thats not smart. Its already an amazing camera for the price. You want more control and features? Get the 7D.

Pay almost three times as much just for 24 frames per second feature is kinda ridiculous taking into consideration fact that 5D II users will get this feature for FREE.
Iits not tons of features,24p is not a ton feature. Its just simple number which wont make it camcorder anyway but will improve sales .Would people start to sell their 7D if 500D would get 24p ? I dont think photographers care that much about frame rate anyway and if film makers are just small part of customers then i dont see the problem.

You can lock ISO and you can figure out which shutter speed it has duriing some ISO settings,on ISO 1600 it has 1/30 - 1/60 and in ISO 100 it has about 1/2000 - 1/4000.

That bit about a superior sensor goes the other way around. It's quite apparent you have not held the K-x in hand. The K-x knocks the T1i out of the ring when it comes to dynamic range and ISO performance. It's on par with Nikon D700.

Also add the in-body stabilization, which is more effective than most Canon IS lenses I've used.

I do agree that Canon has tons more glass to choose from and at lower prices (especially second hand).

I wouldn't really hold my breath for full manual control on either camera but you at least get Aperture control on the K-x and if either company is likely to release new firmware with said control, I'd bet on Pentax.

Sorry but go to ANY event where there are pro photographers and you will see all Canons and some Nikons. I have yet to see a Pentax. There is a reason for this. I am a pro photographer myself, have been for years. I have shot with the K-x and while it is a nice camera, Pentax has a long way to go before getting on Canon and Nikon's level.

Come back down to Earth. We're talking entry level DSLRs, not pro equipment. I'm not saying Pentax has a superior line of cameras to either Canon or Nikon. I'm not blind. All I'm claiming is that the K-x is a superior camera to the T1i, ESPECIALLY considering the price. Don't forget that the K-x with the kit lens retails at $550. There's a lot you can get for the difference.

We shoot on a JVC GY-HD100U in HD for almost all of our shoots. We are also preparing to shoot our first feature film with it also. I sold my Panasonic DVX100 in order to buy the Pentax K-X, it isn't our primary camera but it makes a great b roll camera and helps with those important DOF shots. I was looking at buying a Letus kit for $1800, but since we are on a micro budget we could only afford the camera's, lighting equipment and pro sound equipment. I am looking forward to using the K-X on the project. In the right hands of someone whom knows how to properly use the adjustable ISO and aperture features this is a really sharp camera. I can shoot my JVC and the K-X side by side and with minimal post editing, I can make them look identical. Its not the size of the equipment, its how you use it!!

Manual control on the T1i

Manual control on the T1i

Actually there are 2 work arounds for the manual control on the T1i. They both work great...

1) Set your control dial to Av for Ap Priority in still mode. Set your aperture. Now press down on the lens release button and very slightly turn the lens towards the unlock position, I mean it just takes a little. Your display will go from say f2.8 to f00. When you see F00 you are ready. Shift the control to video mode, your aperture, or speed, or ISO is locked. The camera will tell you there is no lens attached, but we know different. Remember to relock the lens when you are done shooting.

2) Get a Nikkor to EF adapter (about $8). If you or your buds have some old Nikkor lenses, attach to the adapter and the body. Bingo, you have full manual control. It is as simple as that and both work great.

I read that you need to press dof preview before you twist off right?

Also that just locks your iris, not your iso and shutter speed which give you the real problem. Right?

Right. The lens twist trick only lets you select the Aperture, not iso or shutter speed. Not ideal but it's a start.
