PAL makes great sense for PAL countries, but in NTSC-land it's basically a silly choice.
PAL still makes a good choice if you want to shoot video for film blow-up. Even if you live in an NTSC country.

And apparently even shooting 25P with a PAL DVX100 brings further improvements over plain 50i.

The principal reason for this is economical, as an NTSC to film transfer will cost about 30% or more than PAL to film. The 20% extra lines are a bonus too.

What I do not know yet is if there are labs doing transfer from 24p stuff shot on DVX100 for the same prices than PAL labs.

If blowing-up 24p prices are the same as a standard NTSC blow-up, then going to 24p (for film projects) is still senseless.

Adjusting the 4% pitch, correcting PAL's 25 frames running slower at 24 frames, is easy and almost unnoticed on modern audio editing.

Re: What about ag dvx100AE (PAL)?

I know where you're coming from, and people have made that argument before.

My counter is... (assuming the user is in NTSC territory) what are they going to do with the camera?  If their sole intention to ever use the camera is for this film blow-up project, er, well, that's really a kind of silly project to be involved in, isn't it?  A rough estimate would be that 99.5% of all DV features that are made will never be blown up to film.  Even among people who set out to specifically make a film for blowup, probably 95% of them never do.

So they're stuck with a camera that has basically no resale value, cannot be played on any television in the country, can't even be used for documenting the kids growing up, they can't shoot weddings or commercials with it... they're stuck.

All because they just HAD to have that extra 20%.

For a film blow-up they'll never do.

So I'll say it again: for almost every possible NTSC-dwelling customer out there, buying a PAL camera is a silly choice.  If you take offense to the word "silly", let me substitute the phrase "wildly impractical." Once upon a time, before the advent of a 24P video camera, PAL was easily the better choice. Now, factoring all possible angles in, PAL is not even in the running (in my opinion, yours may of course vary).

It makes perfect sense for PAL countries, and I highly recommend that if you're in PAL territory, use the DVX in PAL and just conform the 25P to film with the audio slowed down.

Re: What about ag dvx100AE (PAL)?

Shooting PAL in NTSC land isn't that stupid an idea with this camera. If you want output to NTSC tape then I agree probably more grief than its worth BUT...
For how much longer will you be putting family videos onto VHS?
You can very easily shoot 25p, convert to 24p and author DVD at 24p. This way you retain the advantages of the extra resolution. These DVDs will play in both PAL and NTSC players, most Hollywood DVDs are authored this way.
I do agree ouput to film is a very unlikely thing to be happening and doesn't justify buying the PAL version unless you've got a project that you know is going to go to film (and got the money up front)!
However if you ever want to upsize the footage to HD again the PAL camera would give you that bit extra resolution and when doing the upscale every bit's going to help.

BTW I'm in PAL land so I could be biased!

hi, could you explain this to me please? because i learned that practically no ntsc dvd-player plays pal-dvds and what you said is interesting because i need to convert a pal project to ntsc to sell it in america. converting it to 24fps might be a better choice ...

Re: What about ag dvx100AE (PAL)?

I'm planning to get the dvx100a to shoot indie feature with mini 35 adapter on 16:9 format.
I Just foud out that the new squeeze mode doesn't capture 33% more image but just expands the letterboxed image into 4x3. :-/
That's pretty upsetting!
So I'm back to step one.
How to achieve 16:9 and keep max resolution?
Is the solution to just forget about mini 35 and just get a bunch of lens adapters (i.e .6 .7 1.6 and fish eye)?
Thanks for insights

Re: What about ag dvx100AE (PAL)?

You could try mounting the anamorphic adapter in front of the mini35's lens...

other than that, I don't think there's any way to get the full surface of the chip and 16:9 image shape.

Re: What about ag dvx100AE (PAL)?

Dear Guru - barry
It seems you are also answering me @dvinfo.net
Do you mean 16|9 anamorphic for 35mm lense?
That would be quite a machine & I doubt being able to make one in vietnam!
I'll follow with you on other site.
Why not shoot full size and crop later then...
Anyway I shoot Pal...

The DVD player will do the pulldown to 60i in a NTSC DVD player. In a PAL player I think it plays it out at 48i and the TV copes with that but I'm not 100% certain. One way or the other though it does work.

Do you mean 16|9 anamorphic for 35mm lense?
What I mean is, you could use still-camera lenses on the mini35 (like Nikon or Contax) and use the filter threads on the still-camera lenses to attach the Panasonic anamorphic adapter. I used the mini35 with my Zeiss still-camera lenses, and the results were fantastic. But, I didn't think of attaching the anamorphic adapter until I'd already sent the mini35 unit back, so I didn't get to test it. Most of my lenses have 49mm filter threads, so I'd use a 49mm->72mm step-up ring, and then try to attach the anamorphic adapter to that. It *might* work. Might not, too, I guess.

Other than that, I think the only way you're going to get IN-CAMERA widescreen with the mini35 is to either a) shoot on a DVX100A using "squeeze" mode, or b) shoot at full frame but use movie camera anamorphic lenses, for a 2:1 squeeze, which will give you a 2.66:1 widescreen image. You would have to then crop that image down to 2.35:1 for film transfer.

Or, you could do what I did, which is just shoot in letterbox mode, and then let the film transfer house worry about blowing up that letterbox image to fill the film frame.

Re: What about ag dvx100AE (PAL)?

hello everybody
i am a new member of this site and thinking about buy a dvx100ae in june. Mine could you say me how much did you pay to camera and adapter? what is the cheapest solution to buy a dvx100ae?

And another thing about dvx100, people said that the camera has some problems about high-contrast artifacting and 2 frame lost in volume-image synchronous... What do you think about this problems?

Re: What about ag dvx100AE (PAL)?
2 frame lost in volume-image synchronous...
The DVX100 does indeed have a 2-frame audio sync offset in 24P footage.

However, the DVX100A fixed that. It should no longer be a concern.
