my buddy has a western digital 300gb ext. hd and it was formatted as fat32.... had several problems. i was going to reformat it but he left for notre dame before we had the chance.

not sure about them.

I think you'd have better luck posting this in the Marketplace forum instead of the DVX Footage forum.

I bought the 500GB MyBook thinking it was a deal - especially with the 16mb buffer. I found it way too slow for video editing - digitizing into FCP tends to bail out. (I did not reformat the drive, though, just started using it.) I highly recommend the G-RAID series, as they have two drives striped together in a RAID 0 in one firewire 400/800 case. Mine has been fast and flawless - I even see more realtime response in SD editing with them. They also dropped prices recently, making it a real good deal. I have been using the MyBook 500GB for backups now - anyone think if I reformat the drive it will be more friendly toward video-editing?

i bought a western digital usb drive a year ago. thankfully, all i use it for is
streaming mp3's. if your going to be editing footage off it, i would suggest
getting a model that is firewire compatible. it is substantially faster.

edit: here is link to one on pricegrabber that has both: link

what i gathering from readig is do i buy it ???? or not or if i do buy it just reformat it ??????

from what i belive the firewire is faster if im incorrect then let me know and what way should the drive be formated it if i purchased it ?????

Stay with firewire. I just bought a Maxtor Firewire/300gb from costco for 159-. I also like Lacie, I have 6 of them!

Just seen the WD My Book 500gb 7200 rpm drives with Firewire/USB2 at Costco today - they caught my attention, but I'm not sure how they'll do as an external video drive. Packaging didn't mention if it had a cooling fan.

They go for $250.

After reformatting my MyBook Premium 500 to Mac OS Extended (not journaled) I now can recommend it to you, Mark Dog - it has been great for video editing in FCP.

Note: It comes PC formatted and that makes for rotten video editing perforance. Also it has a weird auto on/off switch. Basically when you get the drive:
First attach it to your Mac and install the "WD Button Utility"that comes on the drive - this will automatically shut the drive down when you shut down your Mac.
Then use the Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) and go to the Partition tab and change the drive to have a couple partitions in Mac OS Extended format.

Besides, you will have a hard time beating a price of 250 bones for a 500GB tank.
