I shoot @ max 1600 and get 'bearable noise', but higher than that and it looks really nasty. I also set my LCD brightness to about 1/2 and use the ML histogram to see how much black it sees. This gives me a better idea.
Also I shoot @ 1080 but export @ 720. Unless its going on some huge screen, 720 is good. As well, when you shrink it to 720 you're compressing the pixels which will help (at least this is my theory and it seems to work for me
