General Well, Now I am Torn

To introduce myself, Right now I am currently a GH2 user. I have had it for a feew months, and have loved the hell out of the little thing. But for me, Now seeing the new magic lantern hack, Draws me to the canons. Now, originally, I went with the GH2 for a few reasons.

1. I trust Panasonic. Nothing against Canon, I just trust Panasonic.

2. Lack of Moire and Aliasing, by using a different sensor downsampling method

3. No Overheating

4. The hack, at the time, added more than Magic Lantern.

5. Ability to mount whatever glass I wanted.

6. Full HDMI out while Recording

Now, after having the camera for a while, I have seen Some of the Faults that really bug me, and maybe it is just me.

1. Audio, Audio Audio. I don't have as much control as I would like with my Videomic, all I can do is watch the levels.

2. No control over the HDMI out. I don't use external recorders, so a clean HDMI out is useless, I would much rather be able to see my focus marker on there, levels, F-stop, etc.

3. Low resolution LCD screen, for when I am running Stripped down.

4. Lack of cheap accessories for it, it seems there is a lot more for the canons.

5. On my jag35 baseplate, it tends to swivel, and it is just annoying when that happens

Now, these tend to get on my nerves, especially when I look at the T2i, and the new features it has, especially because I have none of these yet.

1. Full manual Audio Control, WITH HEADPHONE MONITORING

2. Crop Marker Guide, something small, but so worth it.

3. Support of cheap accessories built for it.

4. Price is cheaper, I could buy the camera and a couple lenses, counterweight, etc.

5. Built in Intervalometer, that is just awesome.

6. Focus Peaking

So my question is, is it worth it to sell my gh2 and gh2 specific accessories for a T2i and more, or keep it and hope those things come to my camera. And are my original concerns addressed at all? I know this is a canon forum, but is there anyone that has used both? Thanks for help in advance.

As much As I would love to do that, unfortunate;y I cant, Im flat broke and in debt to my rents already. So It is either keep or sell and get that and more right now.

No camera is perfect. If you can swing it keep the GH2 and add the Canon. Use each camera for their own particular strengths.

David Jones is right- neither camera is perfect, or necessarily "better" than the other. Each has their strengths and weaknesses, and I would not recommend switching to one on the precept that it is "better" than the other. I own more than one camera, and after shooting with mostly Canons + ML for so long, I finally purchased a GH2 and plan to sell one of my B-camera T2i's. But I am absolutely also keeping a Canon. Magic Lantern is too good for me to give up entirely, but there are times that the softer image + moire/aliasing make shooting with it less than ideal.

If you can swing two, its worth it. But if you can only afford one, I'd say you've got a really tough choice here. If you're a hobbyist and want more stuff to play with, the Canon offers more development and interesting mods/tweaks/features as well as cool aftermarket accessories (not to mention better photography). If this is your job, and you've been relatively happy with the GH2 until now, I'd say stick with it. The image really is sharper and more detailed, and that last thing you need is moire ruining a client's shoot. The features of ML are extremely helpful, but it has never been a deal breaker to shoot without them. I wouldn't switch just for that.

if this really is your financial situation. you need to work on getting out of debt and getting on your feet. not camera features you think you may or may not need. and i hate to sound preachy. but if you cant generate enough money with your existing gh2 to afford an additional t2i. you dont really "NEED" those features anyway.

yeah. if you think you really have to have a canon. id go with a t3i so you can use the crop feature to minimize the chance of moire

+1 to that.

id prefer to do audio externally with DSLRs anyway. want onboard audio? get a camera with real audio ins...

2. No control over the HDMI out. I don't use external recorders, so a clean HDMI out is useless, I would much rather be able to see my focus marker on there, levels, F-stop, etc.
ok, but you'll be looking at an SD signal while youre recording. id prefer to just add an EVF or loupe to the gh2. or a monitor with the peaking feature you speak of... there are several affordable options out there.

3. Low resolution LCD screen, for when I am running Stripped down.
see #2

what "cheap" accessories are you talking about. you can adapt a gh2 to just about ANYTHING

5. On my jag35 baseplate, it tends to swivel, and it is just annoying when that happens
DSLRs dont have locating pins. thats going to happen with ANY camera. its up to the user to remedy that issue - a thin rubber gasket helps.

seems to me that you're drunk on a couple of features and may not realize what youd give up if you traded the panasonic for the (any) canon.
as somebody whos used all the leading DSLRs. if i could only have one and it had to cover a variety of situations. its gh2 hands down.

Work with what you have and improve. I personally love my GH2.

Anytime I do a sit down interview I always want to have the OPTION of rolling over 12 minutes. Plus, no moire is killer. That being said the T2i with ML is killer and I'd love to pick one up but for now I'll use my FD glass and plug on.

If someone wanted to purchase a GH2 for A1ex to develop on, maybe we could get some of ML's features ported over and put an end to decisions like these. ;)

If I had the funds because I would do it in a heartbeat. Until then I'll save for a T2i, or wait until the price drops more(one can dream right?)

From What I understabd, the way that VK's hack runs, it is stored and uses the camera's actual memory, ROM, whereas ML runs off the Camera's ram. IE, the hacked GH2 is like a modern computer, having the OS installed, whereas ML is like an old computer, the disk boots the OS onto the RAM. I don't know if it could be ported because of that. Anyways, For now I think I will keep the GH2, the images are just so crisp, and eventually try to get a canon body, but this works for me for now.

the headphone monitoring with ml is not really that great. I mean its cool it exists but i rarely use it on a project. the max of +6db gain for the headphones is just not enough and you want to use the maximum analogue db gain anyway which is still pretty quiet in most situations... so no real need to monitor. My videomic recordings is just for backup and syncing purpose, nothing else!
