Well here's the new Canon

10 bit over 8 bit recording increases your color value from 256 colors to 1024 colors per RGB channel giving you a lot more data or shades of colors to work with during color correction. You are literally going from millions of colors at 8bit to more than a trillion colors at 10bit (1024x1024x1024). 10 bit out of the F3's HD SDI port is what sold me on the F3, after color correcting 10bit footage in AVID I would not settle for anything less when buying a new camera.

hmhmh.. am I the only one here to see c300 is way sharper than F3??

or you can make that in post, also?
If by sharp you mean oversharpened to death, then yes.

The only one of those videos that looked good was vincent laforets.

The rest (shot by asc members noless) looked like 7d footage.

Timur, when doing this test did you use the trick of rendering in 32bit mode so the program would have more color space to render out the colors? Or was it rendered in 8-10 bit?

I did it in 32 bit mode, but that doesnt matter, if the source is8bit, it will always be 8bit.

On the big screen in the Paramount theatre Vincents looked amazing. Especially the skin tones, and how it handled that bright sunny day. Iheard that the 30-300 was over $40k, but they did have two smaller lightweight zooms, a wide and television in a big glass case in the exhibit area with no markings as part of future releases. There were the size of the Angeneiux optimo Rouge. Those definitely interested me.

bah. a little out of my price range. I was hoping that they would try and compete with RED when it came to offering more affordable cine lenses, but I guess they have a reputation to uphold when it comes to their lens builds and all.

Another note is they all recorded in camera to the CF cards. All the filmmakers said they had no issues. Sam Nicholsons XXIT had a ton of CG and it was clean up on screen. The low light capability was crazy. 16000 ISO. Useable. They had a shooting area set up with a lit set. Part of the scene was a security guard turning off the lights. This thing sees in the dark. I would look at the monitor and see 20 units on the waveform with detail in the shadows, then look up and it's dark to my eye.

They had charts set up with that backlit latitude chart and it roughly showed 13 ish stops in canon log

A lot of their pricing is still speculation. Curious to see if they will react to the Scarlett announcement and pricing

help me understand why this new Canon is so expensive. It seems they took bits and pieces from all their other models except for the actual chasis. So here's why im confused.
Panisonic developed the af100 from the ground up using a newly developed sensor, specifically for that cam, which is very expensive and time consuming. Canon used an older sensor thats been around for a while and wasn't developed for this camera. So why is it panisonic can make a cam with close to the same specs (aside from codec and Canon being 10 bit) for a 1/4 of the price. Look at the same features they share. granted the af100 is m4/3 vs s35. But everything else is almost identical.

It seems that the 15k price difference is for 10bit? I dont know, maybe i'm missing something. anyone help me understand what justifies the huge price difference.

My understanding was this is a brand new sensor...

They said it is a brand new sensor. There are a few things like the codec that's used from their other cameras, but, colour, low light, and how this sensor breaks it into RGB, with little rolling shutter, (the filmmakers saying they had no rolling shutter issues) or aliasing is a strong start. Canon log included is another, and a broadcast ready codec that you can work with right away. As I also understand it they plan on future cameras, at a higher end, and lower end. Not sure if that only means at price point, or also features, but I'm guessing both.

OK, THANKS Nigel, That makes sense, I misinterpreted a quote. It was the divic 3 processor that was already around for some time. I mistook that as the sensor.

The camera is indeed 8 bits. The HD-SDI out is 8 bits in a 10 bit carrier. Several Canon people at the event verified this. I watched Mobius and XXIT in the screenings and it didn't bother me at all. It just looked like film to me.

The camera body was designed from scratch. The ND unit is totally new. It has three glass filters and is motorized with a neat mechanical back up in case the motor fails. The filters move in and out of the way in a cool card trick like fashion. They designed a new cooling unit that draws air in from the bottom and vents it through two tiny holes in the top. I had to put my ear within 1 cm of the inlet to hear anything (but of course the demo area was not silent). The inlet is on the left side and at the bottom so even if you mounted a mic to the handle, I doubt you will ever pick it up. The camera boots up in like 4 seconds. It only draws around 12 watts with the VF and LCD on and recording at the highest bit rate. This gets you at least 3 hours of run time with those little batteries that fit totally flush inside the body. The LCD monitor/control unit is very clever. It has two hot shoe mounts 90° apart so you can mount it lots of ways. The whole control unit rotates with click detents. The LCD can swivels in two axis and there's a mirror button to flip it. Because you can detach the LCD/Control unit, you can put it far forward on the handle and hold the camera closer to you. The camera is very user friendly, IMO.
