GH5 Weird GH5 recording issue.. Is my camera on drugs?!

So I was shooting a music festival at the weekend with the GH5 when I started to get some issues with the recording. Ive googled it, and searched the forums but havent found anything that looks like the same as my issues.

The first thing I noticed was the MTV style interference and the audio static (turn your volume down before you hit play!) -

Then when I dumped the footage I saw this weird out of order frame recording as well (hard to spot on vimeo but it seems to record every 20thish frame then jump back a couple before going on) -

I thought maybe overheating? Bad HDMI or Lens connection... so swapped it all around but it still cropped up every now and again. So only thing I can think of is overheating... I have no Idea.. anyone else had this sort of issue? Any insights would be very welcome

Eesh, wish I had something to add to help, but I've never experienced anything like this. I hope you're still under warranty.

Good point, This was recorded internally, 1080 10bit 50p to lexar 1000x 64gb card. I had the blackmagic video assist 5 inch plugged in as a monitor and recording DNxHD 45 proxies. The same issue appears on both the internally recorded files and the files recorded on the blackmagic.

If it's not the Lexar then maybe it's the VA...

IMO, glitches like these are sometimes common on Blackmagic cameras. I'm stretching here, but a Video Assist was plugged into the camera...has this ever happened before while using the VA on internal or external footage?

True, I will try running it without the VA. I have used this combo a lot (8 months maybe) but this is the first time it’s happened. . So trying to diagnose what’s different this time. Out of 130 ish clips this issue only showed up 4 or 5 times.

When it did I turned the camera off, took the battery out, gave it a couple of minutes then fired her back up all went back to normal.

That is word-for-word what happens when it does happen with BM cameras. It's very random and sometimes it may never happened and/or sometimes it may occur only once out of 500 clips.

The other thing to look at was the power source. Were they both powered from the same source?

Electrical! Yes, I thought that as well. GH5 powered by its internal battery, and the VA was running off 2 x LP-E6N’s so second day changed the VA to D-tap power but didn’t solve the issue.

I wondered if there was a current escaping through the VA and down the HDMI to the camera causing the fault, but after a quick google it seemed unlikely so settled for just a quick cool down and possible sensor overheat.

Was the battery a real Panasonic battery? Did you have a mic plugged into the mic socket or were you using the XLR adapter ? It is interference coming from somewhere or bad cable or connector. I have run my GH5's for over 4 hours without them overheating. I too use Lexar 1000x 128G recording UHD 60P. I also have a VA too and have not seen this problem.

Yep genuine pani battery’s only. I did have the rode VideoMic plugged into the GH5 the whole time, no XLR adaptor. What cable do you use for the VA to GH5?

GH5 Glitching Issue

GH5 Glitching Issue

Hey th157

Did you ever find out what the issue was? Have you seen it since? Did you send your camera to Panasonic for a diagnostic / repair?

I've just had the exact issue, in both the visuals and audio. Never seen it before this one time.

Was shooting 1080@50p !0 bit 422 Long GOP setting, with a Rode VideoMic Pro (powered by a pretty new and reputable brand 6 volt battery) hooked up to the first input on the Panasonic XLR hotshoe adapter, plus a Sony Wireless mic hooked up to the second input on the Panasonic XLR hotshoe adapter, plus HDMI output to a Small HD 502 monitor powered by 2 x Canon LPE6 batteries (genuine).

Had the camera set to dual record, and was recording in the standard Neutral profile.

The item I thought would be causing the issue initially was that the client (another production company / operator) wanted me to record to his MicroSD card in a caddy. I would never do this otherwise as I have always shot with my V90 128GB Delkin SD Cards which were the first ones available for the GH5. Expecting the MicroSD card may not be reliable I used one of my Delkins as the safety dual record card in the second slot.

Pretty much in the first 5 - 10 mins I started noticing this same glitching issue on my external monitor. I then looked to the GH5's own LCD as saw the same glitching but for the most part it appeared it was glitching milder than what I was seeing most of the time on the external monitor.

I initially switched the camera off and on but the issue did not / was not resolved. I then switched it off and took out the battery, and then turned it on again and still the issue persisted. I also tried a new camera battery (yes they were all genuine panasonic batts). I also tried the process including taking out the HDMI that was connected to the Small HD monitor. Again no significant change. I then took out the Micro SD Card and inserted another of my Delkins (so now both slots had identical Delkins on board). The issue seem to resolve itself, being that the almost constant glitching had now subsided, however later during the shoot that same glitching did pop up a handfull of times (of course nowhere to the extent of before).

I have no idea what this is. There's inclings online to this happening to others but it doesn't seem to be a major widespread issue from my initial searching... The other thing is, the same client / production company said they used that same Micro SD card in the caddy in their Panasonic S1H the next day and reckoned they had no issues... to me using a Micro SD card like that is like plugging a double adapter into a double adapter and expecting solid results... I'm still dubious about the card issue and am seriously hoping that has not cause an electrical issue / damage to my camera.

What do you think / can you recommend any step you took to rectify the issue going forward??

Cheers bud, and thanks for any other help / recommendations others could provided also!!??

I had this issue a couple of years ago, scared me shitless!

never found out what it was and it's never happened again. (that wasn't really a lot of help was it..)

From reading through this, my first impression is that there is some sort of RF interference getting into the camera. Was there a strong RF source in the vicinity, such as a TV or radio transmission tower? (A wireless mic or cellphone are not nearly strong enough RF sources to cause interference like that.) A police or emergency services (fire department, EMS) radio can transmit at 100 Watts, which might be a suspect if there was one nearby -- say, within 100 feet/30 meters.

Just a thought. I'm a relative old-timer, and I once worked for a county servicing 2-way radios in police and fire vehicles. They can definitely throw interference to other devices. Now that we are in a nearly completely digital world, we forget that there are still high-powered transmission devices out there that can randomly spray interference.
