Weird flickering, does anyone else see this?

Hello!

I have just recieved my 12-60mm Oly and did a quick test pan when I discovered a werd flickering during the pan. Are my eyes slow, or my tft or is there something wrong?

Please take a look! You can mostly notice it on the lighter spots on the right wall, next to the fan; and later in the pan when my brother comes into the frame on his upper body. you have to go full screen. But once fullscreen I just see it all over the place.

It can´t be flickering lights since there´s only daylight...

My settings were Gh13-hacked but only for bitrate, so:

- FHD 25fps non-native
- 1/50th shutter
- F2,8
- *.mts directly uploaded to vimeo

Thanks!

I can't see anything out of the ordinary on my end, even when slowed down. Is it supposed to look like flickering lights cause I don't see that either in the wall or your brother.

I use both the newest VLC and Windows Media Player and with both there´s that stuttering within highlights going on.

Edit: Actually it is everywhere, but only in highlight areas is it easily seen (here on my displays anyways...)
Slow frame refreshment on display. seems like f***ed up pull down, but as PAL user I don´t do one.

But if you guys tell me that it looks just fine I´ll have to check up on my displays...

I don´t see it when I go through it frame by frame...I´ll try if there are new drivers for my graphic card.

thanks for watching!

The only flickering I see is the kind that is mostly seen on footage produced at "filmic" frame-rates on cameras with rolling shutter. Reshoot at 720p50 and my bet is you'll notice much less of it. Also, try panning from left to right, in the direction of shutter's "roll."

You mean those weird lines that seem to "cut" the footage here and there? If that's what you're talking about, it's just because it's the internet. Every video I've seen anywhere online has that problem.

I can confirm that (the above, not the lines thing). Not so much the other pan direction, but very much in SH where it is gone.

So it´s normal for FHD at 25p with 1/50th shutter and not everyone even sees it, sounds about fine to me.

Thanks!

@Diego: No, I guess I just kind of looked to long at the footage and started to see things that usually aren´t perceived (most likely because somethin worth watching is happening in the frame). I know what you mean though ;)

Ah, ok. Well never mind then.
I've seen what you are talking about diego, especially when watching vimeo footage in an embedded window, not full-screen. Perhaps flash-based players' scaling algorithms are not up to snuff. Wait, an HD video player written in Flash -- that's where the problem starts ;)

Only thing I see is from panning too fast while recording 24p/25p motion. Your pans need to be slower when filming in those framerates. You can also help minimize the appearance of it by following a subject in the foreground with your pan... keeping the subject in relativelyt he same part of the frame... Its' still there, but we are focused on that subject and don't notice it...

Otherwise, you've got to slow down your pans... Or shoot Saving Private Ryan shutter speeds :)

Unless I'm not seeing whatever you are seeing....

I downloaded the file at Vimeo and played it by my laptop connected to TV. I have to admit that I expected some stagger-like motion due to bright subjects and relatively fast panning. However, all the motion was smooth like butter. Probably it's TV's "fault" (too much "intelligence" inside). :)

the vimeo file is fine and the flickering is nromal 24p flicker strobing when panning fast with a wide lens... win 7 codec also shows it fine... vlc screws it all to hell.. vlc is crap.

I´m pretty sure that´s it. I have to read up on panning speeds and maybe...just maybe film something interesting in the foreground :)

I just realized that this article about panning speeds I used to have in my favourites is gone. I found it on web.archive.org though and took the liberty to upload it myself:

I will leave it there until hell freezes over.

Thanks to you all again for looking!

Hi there,
i am new to video recording and know the same effect with my videos. Some others [EDIT: from other members ;)] are so smooth with mid-fast paning.

I found out and read here you only can pan slow with the 1028p24 recording setting. 720p60 is good for faster panings.

Can anybody tell about the shutter speed? On 720p60 i do not get a smooth slowmotion. I use cs5 and put the video file time to 40%. How can i get a real "slow motion" in cs5? I did not get it with right click on the file... there is no option to change the file settings p60 to p24 or something else.

it's also not just about the speed of the pan but the smoothness of the movement.

even if you move slow but jitter the camera you will get that.

it needs to be an easy in easy out smooth one motion move. there is a reason why people spend so much time setting up dollies and sliders and jibs and all other tools not to have jitter in the movement.
