Wedding Videographers-What resolution and frame rate

Fair enough, if the client wants 1080p film it that way. But otherwise you'd be better filming in 720p, the end result is very similar, according to barry the resolution of the camera is only slightly above 720p anyway.

I'm confused...if 1080p gives better quality for the same HDD space, why would you be better in 720p?

Will Compressor/Encore not cut a BD if it's filmed in 1080/30p? I don't want to find that out the hard way!

1080p uses roughly twice the disk space and takes twice as long to transcode as 720p at the same frame-rate. Added to this you have the option of going to a higher frame-rate in 720p for scenes that you might wish to convert to slo motion such as the first dance etc.

So in summary, there is a very slight advantage in resolution to 1080p which will not be noticeable on most TV sets and even then only by pixel peepers.

720p has the following advantages:

Slo Motion - Very useful in Wedding films

Transcode speed

File size following transcode

Speedier to edit/render

With a full raster camera like the EX1 it's different of course, but for the 150, calling it "Full HD" is marketing speak more than anything.

I wish people wouldn't just say "720P has slo mo" it's the 720 60P mode that can be used for slow motion otherwise the only real advantage is for disc space/speed when transcoding 30p or 24P.

720 60P is just as much a hog, especially when using prores or DNxHD (similar codecs btw except DNxHD is free and can be used by non apple NLE's).

If you re-read my post you will see that that was exactly what I was saying. You have the choice of less disk space/transcoding or better slo mo with 720p. With 1080 you get neither of these.

Well, I think the conclusion to give the OP from the responses in this thread is that it depends. Depends on your editing setup's storage/speed capabilities, client requests, and shooting style.

I for one don't edit using much slow motion (a bit more verite cinematic documentary style on my end), so sticking with 1080 is no problem for me. The FCS3 prores flavors have fixed many of the storage woes for me..

I am using 1080P for everything but sports and slow-mo. I use 720 60P for those. Generally, I refuse to use interlaced.

Is 1080 60i slo-mo better than 720 30p slo mo? By much?

Can I use 60p & 30p in the same FCP timeline?

Its 100% better to have 60p vs 30p when doing slowmo... 60i is really 30p when put together...

and yes... most people just use the 60 on a 30p timeline, and slow down what they want to... then export 30p.

-Summary of this thread-

It dosen't really matter, the client will never know the difference.

Note: Isn't slow motion in a wedding video a little cheesy?
