Who says SD is dead, long live the DVX I say.
Filmed my second ever wedding on the weekend, bit different this time round, it was your typical traditional church wedding. The lighting was very spesh on this day, and the good OL' DVX just lapped it up.

No CC in post apart from a bit of white diffusion I added with MB. These colors I pulled from the cam are ridgy didge scene file gems. IMO this is the best DVX look I've got so far,,,, I just keep finding ways to get more out of her, she's a long long way from being put aside for the HMC152.

Hope you enjoy!!

Wow looks great, well done. If you dont mind me asking, what settings on the DVX did you use?
Yes, please. I've got a wedding coming up on the 25th. I'd like to know. Also, you got some good dof shots in there. How did you accomplish those so effectively?
Oh, by the way, great job-again.

Thank guys for the comments, most welcome, when I get hoem tonite from work i'll post some grabs and my scenefile settings. Shallow DOF on DVX is easy although its not super great its still nice,,, use all the zoom and iris at f2.8, if outdoors you'll need both nd filters on.

Okay, hope this isn't a dumb question. You always refer to your camera as a 102B. I have an AG-DVX100B. Are they similar? Is the 102 maybe just a version released in Australia or something?

Thanks. I went ahead and googled and came to the conclusion that it was simply the PAL version. " A rose by any other name..." or however it goes. Call it what you will, it is a great camera, especially in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing. The DVX is the first serious camera I've ever owned and it, along with the work I've seen on this forum, including you're own, has broadened my awareness of what good video looks like. What I used to find acceptable in my own work isn't anymore. My wife doesn't really understand or appreciate it but I'm in an explosive and somewhat stress-inducing stage of growth right now. The stress is being caused by a sense of self-doubt, I'm sure.

My wife didn't understand how emotionally attached I was when I got my DVX. She understands now,,,, probably cause she gets a bit of play money from its and my efforts!!!!
Ahh yes, women and money, shuts em up every single time!

Have no self doubt my friend,,, just watch and learn as much stuff as you can,,, find out why and how to make a shot look breathtaking, it will all happen in good time!

great stuff shaun. luved the footage man :)

Question. I've heard that 24p or in your case 25p doesn't look good (looks choppy)when slowed down. Doesn't look any way in your vid. can u enlighten me?

Also...how many cams did u use for the wedding?

U certainly are an inspiration for me to aspire to regarding weddings. I also watched the other trailer. Good stuff man! (i'll be getting my 100b soon.acttually ordered it already)

Hey mate, thanks heaps.
I'm still not that impressed with the slowed down stuff,,, it appears to be best when the camera is not moving. Most of the time i'm shooting at least 1/125th shutter so when you slow it down its not too choppy.
I use two cams for the weddings, soon hopefully 3 when I get the HMC152.
Have fun when your DVX arrives, you'll go to sleep for the 1st month thinking about it all the time!!!

It looks really good, a lot of wedding videography shots i've seen other people show me are really cheesy, but these were great. Keep up the good work.

Yeah thanks Thomas and Serge, squeezing the DVX is fun and cheesy wedding shots are not. When i'm filming a wedding, I try and get shots when people aren't staring directly down the lens and smiling. I suppose you can get away with a couple of shots like this and use them in the right context, but generally I ask all folks to be as natural as you can and forget i'm here, unless I instruct them otherwise.

Talk about cheesy. I just taped a wedding this past Saturday and the best man became somewhat obnoxious as the night and drinking went on. I was interviewing some guests when he, once again, poked his head in front of the camera and made a remark. Everyone laughed so I guess it's not the most horrible thing. Luckily it only happened a couple of times so I count myself as being lucky.
One question I have Shaun is how do achieve the smooth motion while moving with the camera. I shoot most of the formal stuff, especially the ceremony, from a tripod because I prefer the rock steady look. Not to mention this past ceremony was in a Catholic church and was the full mass, Ave Maria and all. I was thanking my lucky stars I was on a tripod. However, I would like to get a bit more creative elsewhere in the production. Without a steadicam, I'm a bit hesitant to get too crazy.

based on other footage i've seen from him, he has a flycam

I have a question ...i've seen where others say its hard to shoot weddings in 24p cuz is harder to focus and stuff. Do u find it that difficult Shaun?

Yes correct, I use a flycam for some stuff. Focus with the flycam is pretty easy, don't use any zoom at all. As far as focus goes for all the other shots you just need zoom very slowly if your gonna use auto focus in 25p, this will give it enough time to react. General thing I've found, the more zoom, the more you have to watch focus, simply because you start to create a more shallow depth of field so focusing on your subject is not as easy and with the slow reaction time of auotfocus in progressive mode, its tricky. I'm pretty aware of what needs to happen on a shoot so its becomes easier with practice.

just looking at your settings plus "use all the zoom and iris at f2.8, if outdoors you'll need both nd filters on."... Man it must have been one sunny day when you shot that. We dont get that kinda light here in ireland! Do you ever use 25p handheld? how do you find it? I dont use it as i find i need so much light... again I tip my cap to you! Great piece!

Using max zoom and f2.8 iris is for the most shallow Dof you can get.
Yep it gets real bright here man,,,, remember you are very north of the equator, your summer will obviously yield the best light.
25p handheld, all the time. I don't shoot anything in 50i on the DVX, I hate the look of video even for doco type work. My B cam only shoots 50i which is a right old pain cause I gotta run all that footage thru the MB de-interlacer. (Saving for an HMC152) although I could go and buy it now with re-draw on my mortgage, the price will drop and i'll have more "real money" to put towards it.
