Wedding Preview - Critiques ?

I am new to the world of wedding video and am interested in hearing peoples opinions on the look of this Wedding DVD Intro.

I know there is probably a more appropriate place to post this like over at DVinfo under their Wedding/Events section but for some reason cannot gain access over there.

This wedding was shot with 2 XH-A1's - Stock preset, Post in FCP 6

Any comments are appreciated!

Peak,

I thought it was really well done. I like the shot of the window, reflecting the bride in grayscale with the pink flower in the foreground. When the song starts to speed up, I think the video starts a little before the music picks up again. It could be more sync. You can possibly put a fade in transition or play with the opacity. Other than that, I really like it.

i liked it, composition was really good sometimes.
I would try to crunch the blacks a bit more in the B&W shots. They are a bit to grayish and need more contrast.
good job

I personally like the blacks in the B&W shots. And the sync is a little off when the song picks up again.

It would have been nice to have your own light outside, so you could narrow the aperture a bit and pick up some of the sky. Though the white did have a wedding-ish thing about it.

It's really nice that the party was really up for some nice shots. I liked it, though it was too much for my personal taste (as to say, I wouldn't want my wedding video looking like that)

great work!! I'm sure your clients loved it!! The shots were very clean... good compostion even considering the run and gun shooting style you're forced to adapt to during a live event... if there was anything i dis-liked it would be the film grain effect at the end of the highlight reel... i thought it didn't look very authentic... however, it could just be the compression of the QT. thumbs up!!!

I won't nit pic about the technical aspects...framing, exposure, editing, because I think that you achieved far more than the usual "wedding videos". Run and gun weddings are particularly difficult because everything happens so fast. Weddings can be far more technically challenging to shoot if you factor in the speed element. You did a great job.

My main critique is about how the clip seemed to lack emotion. I didn't see it in the faces of the bride and groom. I think that your "talent" has something to do with that though. I have shot weddings that made me cry behind the lens. I've shot some weddings that were...well..... less emotional.

Please post your next wedding. It will be interesting to see what you can do with the next couple. Hopefully a couple that is more expressive.

The funny thing here is that we were in the sky ( very high altitude ) so there was no blue or texture, just a veil of white, which seemed appropriate.

I do agree with you to some extent as far as the emotion (or lack of) goes. Any hints on how to bring it out of them? Thank You for taking interest, we will post a clip from our next wedding.

KROOKEDCLOWN - I thought it was pretty good.

So what do you charge for a 2 camera package like that ?
We haven't quite worked up to what we will be charging yet as we are still gaining experience in this industry. We will be charging an average of $3,000 a Wedding, once we get the proverbial ball rolling.

Thank You All for your comments and critiques.

Oh and we will try VividRGB next job as well.

I agree that the shot selection was lacking some emotions...esp in the beginnng. One real skill of editing a wedding is looking through hours and hours of footage for that one special 5 second clip. I also think that it could have been about half as long and it would be much more polished.

I like your compositions mixing the b&w with color, and technically I thought it was pretty much on par with what you should see in a wedding video.

I was thinking, as far as emotion goes, is to adjust to them. I mean, if they requested that cheesy song and for the style, then it's trouble I guess. But if I thought it'd be too hard to bring it out of them, I'd probably go a whole other route with the shoot. Instead of the sappy emotional tearjerk style, maybe go more deadpan or however they seem to be. Instead of trying to get them in provoking poses of love, try to figure out what's more natural to them.

I've done photography for weddings, and sometimes I try to get the party to do things that just don't go over. So, often times I go for a more personal photo first, like if it's tough guys, I tell them to put their hands in their pocket and snare or something. Then I get that shot a few times, then tell them to take their hands out of their pocket and smile. Sometimes it works.
