Need some more feed back positive or negative I can handle it all (constructive criticism). I have been trying to get more and more involved with wedding videography. I have posted a second demo video on my web site http://www.jsvideoworx.com/Js_Video_Worx/Samples.html. The bottom video is my latest video, that I would appreciate some feed back on. I have been trying to do get my business off the ground with creating my website, contracts and spreading the word, all on top of working a full time job. The video was mostly shot with a canon xh a1.

Hey. I'm not at an expert at filming weddings, but since you asked for some constructive criticism, I'll give you my thoughts.

Some of the camera work was pretty shaky. For a wedding, unless you have a glide cam or some other type of stabilizing system, I think you're better off keeping the camera on a tripod. Also, it appears you only had one camera? Obviously for the ceremony, 2 cameras would be ideal; one set up wide and the other manned by you for closer shots. Additionally, there were a lot of zooms in your highlight edit. I realize you need to zoom in and out during the ceremony, especially if you only have one camera, but when you are editing a short clip such as this one, it would look a LOT better if you cut out the zooming portions (you can use zooms occasionally, but they should be nice slow and steady zooms). Lastly, your colors at the reception did not look very good. It looked pretty dark in that room, which I know makes it pretty difficult, but you do have options in trying to correct that a bit. Did you color correct in post? Even color correcting shots that already look good can make a huge difference.

Alright, I hope that helps. Nice work overall.

I recently bought a nice fluid heard tri-pod, I thought the same thing with the shakiness and zooming to much. As far as the filming in the reception, i am having problems with figuring out a good lighting setting. I have read mean posts on it, but for some reason my footage is still coming out grainy. I have purchased a Light but dont really like to use it all that much. Also learning COLOR is on my to do list. Thanks for the help.

No problem. It sounds like you're headed in the right direction. As far as lighting goes, that is a tricky issue. The darker it is, the more gain you may be tempted to use, but the more gain you use equates to a lot more grain. Make sure you turn Auto Gain off. If it's pretty dark, try setting your gain at 6. If it still looks really dark, maybe try 12, but that will probably look pretty grainy. I'd definitely never go any higher than 12 unless grain is what you are going for. Other than that your only option is, like you said, is most likely your light.

I agree with Eastcoaster. A tripod really is a must and so is adequate lighting during the reception. If you have a fluid head tripod, definitely use it next time. I've shot quite a few weddings over the years and on the last wedding I taped, I veered off my normal path and attempted to go handheld, using a shoulder brace. You can believe I wish I had stuck with what's worked all these years. Granted, it's not as shaky as what old Uncle Scott drunkenly shot at my wedding, but I'm still not too happy with it.
