WEBSERIES: A batman spoof series, HOLLYWOOD BATS

Just recently started a webseries with a few collaborators out here in Los Angeles, and we'd love to get some feedback from people.

Shot this on a SONY EX1 with a Letus adapter for 35mm lenses and 2 kinos in the back for lighting. We managed to shoot this particular episode(about 4 pages) in 6 hours. And it was probably the coldest night I've ever experienced in LA too.

Here's a short 20sec clip.

And this is the full episode.

We'd really love some feedback and if anyone has any thoughts on how to get an audience to watch, that would be great as well!

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAa ah jeez ya'll killed me with this.

you can really tell how cold it was on the lady's face, her nose looked frozen haha.

anyways the first part wasn't that funny and the main guy's lines were a little campy. however after the robber comes it becomes funny and then when the main guy starts having a convo with batman that's the funniest by far... my favorite is "evil has no face, it knows no geography, it has no color ...although I find it's mostly black" LMAO!!! so foul but so funny.
i thought the whole thing was really proefssionally done. really great... the end was funny too "i need a base of operations" lmao

ah jeez funny stuff.

I do have to admit "evil has no face, it knows no geography, it has no color ...although I find it's mostly black" is probably the funniest line ever coming from "Batman" while specifically talking to a black guy. I like in the next ep. dude's like "Keep it real, you need a place to crash." The dialogue between the main guy and Batman may make this a hit. Like those old "Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen" comics, this is like "Batman's Pal from the Hood".

That was pretty good. How do you plan on getting around the copyright issues to do a webseries with Batman?

It's parody. That generally means fair use, although a series makes it slightly more difficult, and opens the claim of brand damage at some point. But that seems unlikely.

I definitely liked that. To second the 'it's mostly black' line as being funny, I especially liked how the guy he was talking to seemed to agree. Excellent delivery from him overall.

everything after batman shows up was hilarious. i don't think the conversation in the beginning added to it, though.

legitimate question. i'm not a lawyer, but i think there's something special about parodies. there's only a mention of batman in the clip, he didn't even mention gotham ("east coast").

Regens, have you thought of this?

Yes, it is fair use, but also DC is also pretty cool about this kind of thing. Lucas on the other hand, watch out. LOL.

But DC doesn't own the film rights, those belong to Warner Bros. and they are what's holding up the release of the 60s TV show to DVD (which is owned by Fox).

I think a single parody would probably be fine but I'm just wondering if a webseries would draw unwanted attention from Warner Bros., particularly if it caught on.

I believe they could argue irreparable brand damage if they could show this series as popular enough to affect their market, which would outweigh fair use. Parodies have been pulled for that before.

But Warner owns DC. And the biggest Batman fan film (Grayson), has been around for year with no issues until now and that was simply DC requesting it not be shown at a convention (on a big screen).

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback. Glad you guys are enjoying it. The co-lead, the one that isn't Batman, wrote it. So he deserves the accolades for the dialogue.

In terms of the issues of DC and their IP, there are provisions under the law that allow parody and satire. We've spoken to some lawyers before we started just in case we ruffled some feathers, but the advice we were offered is that since this is blatantly a parody of the batman character we should be fine.

The hard part for us right now is really figuring out how to get this out there. Getting views from people, and even getting our friends to spread the word has been extremely painful and not very fruitful. So from one budding filmmaker to another, if you guys like it we'd really love for you guys to comment on it in youtube, hit the like button, so we can boost its search rankings in youtube and make it seem even more legit to people who just stumble upon it.

We're also trying to grab small 20 second clips to help promote it since it's way easier to share a short 20 second clip than a 5 second episode. So thanks to you guys we're promoting the "Evil has no color...but I find it mostly black." clip.

Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McCBZwyZCi8&feature=youtu.be

Otherwise we'd appreciate more comments and thoughts, especially as we prepare to roll out the second episode.

man that's a shame I just checked out linked near your video are these other terrible batman spoofs done by amateurs, kids with a camcorder and they have 13 million views and 8 million views respectively, whereas yours is a much more highbrow and professional production ...i guess just shows the type of video 'consumers' there are out there and what they like...but here's hoping to yours blowing up too

Nathyn thanks for sharing it. Definitely helps.

Homonculus...you have no idea how much we have the exact same sentiments...And you know I think that's the power of social media. And it's something that teens are embracing way more than even college aged people and young adults have embraced. I'm finding it really hard just to get people to share it on facebook among our own social network.

Sometimes I feel like I need a 16year old to spread the word for us and they'd probably have more success with it in an hour than we would in a month.

hey Regens, it was just in the news today that Justin Beiber has broken the record for highest viewed youtube video in history at something near 250,000,000 views.

this just goes to show you what type of 'content' the 'masses' are clamoring for ....

This was hilarious! Weill written and very professional! You guys have got something here. I thought the whole thing was funny. From the beginning. The acting was also top-notch. This has gotta' pick up.
