With C-Log, you expose reflected whites at 70%, therefore 30 units of highlight protection. Wide DR puts reflected whites at 80% or 20 units of highlight protection, assuming 18% gray card exposed at 40% for both. REC709(Norm gamma)would be more like 90-95% whites, offering little highlight protection.
C-Log has more tonality in highlights than WDR, flesh should not be higher than 50%, or there will be loss of tonality in the skin tone due to compression in the mids.
Yikes! So do you meter the two differently?
By "units" do you mean IRE? Because the camera seems to go to 109... and at a given ISO highlights clip at the same point, indicating the same +/- for Canon Log and WDR, despite different distribution of tonality.
I am somewhat confused. Usually just shoot Canon Log and meter as I would were I shooting film, check the WFM for clipping.
