GH2 Waviness

Please view short clip.

What is the cause of the "wavy look"? This isn't the first time it has happened; it doesn't always happen and MAY happen more consistently at high, i.e. above 5,000 feet, altitude. TIA for help!!

Definitely looks like heat waves to me. I shoot lots of wildlife footage with a 600mm and the ETC function. This is a 3000mm equivalent focal length. Any sort of heat source between you and the subject will cause this. In some cases it's so bad at the distances I film you can't even watch it.

Keeping things like parking lots, heat vent pipes on houses and the roofs of houses or cars out from between you and the subject can mitigate some the effect. Over cast days with down drafts between you and the subject are critical to getting perfect footage at super long ranges.

Cheers,
Pete

Thanks to you guys for the very helpful input. There are two shots taken at this location (one of which is the sample problem) on different days but with the same result. Evidently this dirt road @ 9300 feet is functioning much like a nice paved parking lot on a sunny day and/or the thinner air is subject to more thermal turbulence. I rather think too that using an ENG lens with associated softness doesn't help. Going to be a challenge. Thanks again for the helpful input.
