i hate those dumb mac comercials rant rant !!!

Grammar, Mike. Grammar.

I don't say this because I am "a snob or obsesivly self loathing." I say this because after reading the post, I knew how much effort was probably put into the video clip.

Im not a snob either but if you had encoded the wmv correctly i could have watched it on my Mac like many others here.

I hate those commercials too :)

I am on a Macbook Pro and the clip played fine after download. Matt- do you have the most recent version of Quicktime?

I think a lot of people hate the new Mac commercials because there is a lot of truth to them.

flip4mac.com works great.

Video is alright. I like the fast paced part about 3/4 of the way through...

You'll be banned real quick for comments like that. This is not a kiddy forum for people to play around in, this is a place to learn and share whatever knowledge you can.

Grow up or leave.

yeah iamfat if you dont have anything good to say dont say it at all.

Rcbrown23 i will look into flip4mac thanks!

I liked the shots of the ollies over the guy eating the best. some of the shots were real shakey and there seem to be a lot of zooming in and out going on. just my $.02

That's how i started doing video. Asking my cousin for his panasonic vhs camcorder and shooting all my friends, using a beta deck to dub then edit back to the camcorder because it had a flying erase head. Eventually I got a 8mm camcorder, then hi8, digital8, then miniDV. Sk8 vids like Public Domain, Chin, Ban This (anything by Stacy Peralta - who is still my hero) were a big influence. Shooting skate stuff also taught me about balance and organization. You have to plan out your lines. Soon I started shooting slower stuff like theater and dance. That taught me composition and taught me a lot about lighting and PATIENCE.

Yeah the vid you put up played fine in VLC player. A little shakey though. I would edit a bit more. Don't be afraid to plan out the lines with your friends and follow them around. I know that can be hard in a popular spot. Shoot I haven't filmed skate stuff in long time. Shooters still use fat soft wheels to get smoother shots? are there more and more inline/rollerskate filmers? What are you shooting on? XL1? XL2? Sony? DVX?

Ahhh! I see. Just visited your site. So you have done a little planning on lines. One thing I'd suggest is to pick a better time of day to shoot some of that stuff because shooting into the sun (although I can understand if that's your buddies path you can't help it) but afternoon sun looks real nice (magic hour) also depending on where you live, winter time daylight can look really nice and even. I like the part whre your friend throws his board down and there's an explosion.

Also, if you don't like Quicktime, why are the vids on your site Quicktime? Maybe that isn't your site. QT vs. WMA. It will never end. oh, i'm on a mac BTW.:badputer:

Yeah Ian all the old powell videos rule. I also like the New Deal vid Useless wooden toys and H-streets Hocus Pocus. I guess this is kinda showing my age lol.

Hahah! I say if you skate you never get old. Still have my board. A REAL blank with indy's and i don't know what wheels. A bigger influence on me and most skaters of the time were the PlanB vids (Questionable and Virtual Reality). Especially when it came to music. Then 411 of course. Everytime i see a new ONVideo or anything from canada i just cry. That stuff is so sick. I really got into the zero videos (jamie thomas' production skills on those videos were awesome) and the Toy Machine videos as well.

Ahhh, Hocus Pocus, Matt Hensley... :crybaby:

Yeah I was gonna throw Plan B questionable in there as well. i used to watch it everyday practically. Sean Sheffey and crew! Blind Video Days was also classic to me. Gonz and Jason Lee two of my all time faves.

Yeah Matt Hensley indeed!

It was very obvious you just shot 'whatever' with your friends. There was not any content or points of interest. I felt like I was watching a really long mcdonalds commercial without product placement or production value. What exactly were you looking for when you posted this?

I really do not want to sound mean, but it just looked liked a home video that you decided to post. I was left confused about your motivation or even purpose. Was it a reality piece on the skating subculture? Or was it a skating video, highlighting skaters? For just another amatuer skate video, it was just fine.

I guess it was interesting to watch and I must not understand. I won't go as far as the one guy in this thread, for whom I must apologize. We here at DVXuser are very friendly people. That guy will shape up or be gone.

Posting here, you are asking for opinions, and I must regretfully make my opinion a tad more negative then I usually do. I think you have a good starting point. But I expect more. Keep trying and feel free to post again. I would love to see your progress as a filmmaker.

-Best regards, and best of luck

I'll have to agree on this one. This clip would have been better suited or could probably get more feedback from YouTube, google, etc. If you post something in the DVX clips section you are probably looking for some feedback - but you didn't ask any specifics to kick start any dialogue. The footage wasn't intriguing enough to really start critical dialogue except for the obvious (shakiness, lighting, editing) and the fact that skateboarding isn't much of a sub-culture anymore, in fact it is as, if not more mainstream than it was in the 80's.

Was it tips that you were looking for - or just to hear old skate farts like me rant about the glory days. hahahah... And you've (MikeD) have only chimed in ONCE. Do you plan on improving or creating compelling skate docs? Cause most of us can just turn on the TV or pop in a old sk8 vid on and go... "DAMN!" or be all "Ahh shite, that again?"

This video didn't do much for me. It was sort of long and drawn out and didn't really capture my interest. If you are interested in skateboard videography you should check out the forums at www.skateperception.com. I'm also a skilmer and that site has helped me out a lot.

The glory days you speak of were good, but the whole chocolate/girl team as well as transworld is always coming out with some pretty amazing stuff. Transworld released this documentary a little while back called first love, just about why everyone loved skateboarding so much and for a "skate video" I thought it blew a lot of the others out of the water. Mostly because they just stick to the same old boring things.

Anyways, this was pretty funny for me to watch as I know a lot of the kids in there. D, Jon, I thought I saw reese in there too in the beginning. You've got a lot to work on though man, it just seemed like you kinda filmed whatever and threw it in premiere real quick and then exported. As said before try and plan stuff out a little more, look for some more creative angles/shots, and it never hurts to have some music that just has a lot of good hit points to edit to. I used to film skating a lot, but I finally ended up jumping on the DVX bandwagon and have been making shorts ever since. Doing the whole skateboarding thing did teach me the basics of filmmaking though, which is never a bad thing.

Oh well, keep at it. You'll get better in time.

(That is, only if you use proper grammer and punctuation, reading your posts are like )

Way to much heat on this topic. The best part of that video was the pizza on the grill. Now that's creative, ranch anyone? Joking. Joemiked now that you shot and cut a little skating the best piece of advice i can add is watch more videos and watch them twice especially the framing, your skills will improve so much faster. ...as if anyone watches them just once, who am i kidding... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

cool video, I like the free-form nature of it. I'm going to do a skate video for my nephew this summer, so this is a good reference . . .

keep up the good work kid!
