Was buying a hypercardioid worth it?

As it has been stated countless times in this and every forum by the pros and the enlightened, "sound is just as, if not MORE important than video for professional results" period, this is NOT negotiable, its a fact that has been proven time and time again. if you have to reschedule for availability of your DP then the same concessions should be made for a good sound guy.

There is NO piece of gear that will make up for a good sound guy, period.

Cheers.

Yeah I know, it's just in my experience sound guys don't like rescheduling from the original dates. I usually end up doing the sound myself for the day because of that, so I want to be prepared. Probably not all are like that, just the ones I've worked with for some reason.

Ironpony, I don't think any crew member likes reschedules. It's not just relegated to soundies. If someone is working freelance, they book work based on available days. When a production calls them up and says "Hey, we need to reschedule the shoot" it plays havoc with what they have booked in the future. Me, I set things in motion, that helps prevent that.

Sounds like you may need a strong 1st AD on your production. And have alternates in the wings just in case.

Yeah I really don't like rescheduling either. Usually in my experience it's do to the location all of a sudden not being available and the owners changing their minds, or something like that.

This is why productions have cover sets. If, for some reason (weather, moody location owners, illness, etc.), the primary location for the day becomes unavailable, there's a guaranteed second location - often a different set of scenes for the film - on standby so that the shoot day isn't lost.

Definitely next time I will do that, and I already made it my new policy. But yeah I used the hypercardioid for a whole scene yesterday, and it worked quite well. Keeping it.
