If your brand new DVX arrives with the Lens Cap off HOLD A FLASHLIGHT UP TO THE LENS AND CHECK FOR SCRATCHES!!! When my DVX arrived the lens Cap was off, so I assumed it could have bounced around in the box and hit the lens. Well, I assumed right, but, unfortunely due to my ignorance I did not use the correct procedure to inspect the lens. I simply held the camera up to available light and did not see anything wrong. However, this past Friday I was using the camera for the second time and looked at the lens as direct Sunlight was reflecting off the lens and to my Horror I saw tiny scratches. I knew I had not touched the lens and the only explanation had to be the loose lens Cap. If I would have known to hold a flashlight up to the lens I could have immediatly sent the camera back to B&HPhoto for a replacement, but since I received the camera in September B&H will not take it back or repair it. So for my fellow newbies, don't be as ingnorant as I was and HOLD A FLASHLIGHT OR SUNLIGHT UP TO THE LENS WHEN YOUR DVX ARRIVES!!!

You want to make sure that is an overcast sky, or else the reflection/magnification of the sun back into your eyes can do some damage to your cornea. Make sure never to look at the sun or reflection of it. The best source of intense specular light is a desktop halogen lamp at 50W. That will expose everything. But IMO, the best way to see everything is a with a soft desktop lightsource like a full spectrum fluorescent lamp of about 15W or higher that they sell at artists' supply. That way you can work with the light as well.
