Warning: Adobe OnLocation does not work Cross-Platform!!

I had started a few threads on various forums (including this one) about using OnLocation on a Windows laptop to capture 720p, and then transferring the footage to a MacPro for FCP editing. The footage was always buggy, causing the MacPro to crash.

Well, after spending several weeks on the problem, and communicating with Adobe tech support, it just seems that there is no solution. The Quicktime files created on Windows by OnLocation will not work properly on your Mac, no matter what plug-ins or version of Quicktime Player you install, or any re-exporting/conversions you do.

So if you are thinking of using Adobe OnLocation on Windows but editing on a Mac - don't!! I learned an expensive lesson, unfortunately. Instead of investing in a new Windows laptop and OnLocation, I should have just bought more P2 cards.

That being said, if you are recording on Windows and editing on Windows (e.g. PremierPro) then I imagine OnLocation is a great product.

I had installed the Raylight Encoder Pro on my Windows laptop, hoping that OnLocation would grab that codec. Well, it did not make a difference unfortunately. The files created with Raylight installed, were still buggy once ported over to the Mac.

I also have Raylight installed on my Mac, to edit with native MXFs.

But if you have any other suggestions, I would be happy to try. I still maintain a tiny ray of hope that my laptop investment will pay off.

I suggest you capture to AVI format instead and convert to MXF files with
raylight P2 Maker.

You'll also need the dvrack to raylight converter

Marcus,

Thanks for the suggestion. Do I run the dvrack to raylight converter on my Windows laptop or does it run on the Mac?

I had tried using Raylight's P2 maker with one of the OnLocation Quicktimes and not surprisingly Raylight shut down, like every other Mac app that touches those OnLocation QTs!

But converting the AVIs and making MXFs is worth a shot. Sort of a roundabout way of getting the footage in, but if it works....

And would I also need to get Raylight for Windows? Currently I only have the Encoder Pro on Windows and Raylight on my Mac.

In other words, will the following workflow make sense:

1. Capture to AVI on my Windows XP Laptop using OnLocation
2. Converst OnLocation AVIs to Raylight AVIs on laptop using dvrack to raylight converter
3. Transfer the converted AVIs to my MacPro
4. Use Raylight on Mac to convert the AVIs to MXFs

You need P2 Maker (Raylight Windows) on the windows side to make MXFs from AVI's. Try it with the demo version and then Contact sales at DVFilm.

Marcus,

Proceeded as per your instructions with the DVRack to Raylight converter.

I drop the slam.exe into the same folder as my OnLocation AVI files and double click on it to start it up. I get a command window asking me to hit enter to start the conversions. But once I hit enter, I get the following error:

Microsoft Visual C++ debug Library
File: fprintf.c
Line: 56
Expression: str !=NULL

I tried it several times in several different OnLocation AVI folders, and get the same results. The square.exe also gives the same error across all.

Since Ozzymandius broached the subject of using On Location, I'd like to find out if anyone is pleased with a particular laptop that interfaces nicely with On Location for capture with their HVX 200? I'm thinking it's cheaper to buy a newer faster laptop than a couple of 32 gig cards.

It works OK here, try dragging one file at a time into slam.exe and please contact DVFilm Support.
